I just got the bass and definitely love it, but I'm not 100 percent sure if I should keep it. Again, keep in mind I'm a novice, and haven't played more than a handful of basses. To my surprise, my Select Series definitely holds up to the CS. My Select had flat wounds, but I put the original strings back on so I could have a more apples to apples comparison. The Select is definitely fuller sounding, but the CS has that older sound which I also like. They also weight exactly the same, right around 9 pounds.

I removed the bridge cover from the CS, and it has a serious imprint in the lacquer, but I'm assuming this is normal?

I'm going to spend the day going back and forth, and really making sure. So far I am not able to notice a huge difference in build quality or feel, but again I'm a novice.

More to come.

For about 500 more I can get a great 1972 Jazz bass... would that be crazy?

For about 500 more, I can get an all original 1972 Jazz Bass...

Once I commit, I'll settle down - but I'm in the "need to decide while I can still send it back mode". We've all been here before, right?

(sorry for the double post - not sure how to delete)

I ended up returning the CS bass yesterday. It killed me, but I think it's the right decision. My local guitar shop is expecting a 1975 Jazz (4 bolt) any day now, from the original owner. In the meantime I'll keep enjoying the Select Series.

I think the fun is in the search!

I just purchased an all original 1970 Jazz Bass for sale by the vintage department of guitar center. I got them down to 3200, but it's in the same state so I have to pay tax. But over all, I think 3500 is probably a very decent price - it's exactly what I'm looking for. It's sunburst, has a few scratches and scuffs, very little fret wear in first position, comes with the original case, covers, and for some reason a 1955 Fender brochure which was happened to be in the case. The guy that looked it over said it has no dead spots, and the neck looked very straight.

I will have 72 hours to return it.

I think I will be much happier with this, even though it's grand more than the 64 NOS I just returned.

Pics to follow...

Sounds like you may be suffering from Gear Acquisition Syndrome, also known as GAS.

It's OK as I suffer from it too!

Congrats on your purchase. mid to late 70s basses have to be hand picked, in my opinion, as Fender had its worst quality issues then. I find the very early 70s had better quality bass for bass. This is my experience anyway.

The 'Select', CS64 and vintage you just picked up are all very, very nice instruments but I personally would have chosen the 70 Jazz, as you did. I hope it serves you many years.
