All - I have to make a fairly quick decision on a bass purchase...

I'm currently using a select series passive Jazz bass, but I think I have an excellent opportunity to purchase a NEW CS NOS 64 for 2500 from a very reputable dealer. Would I be crazy to pass it up? I've read the reviews, and I can't imagine not being happy with it.

My main question is... does that price sound good?

Thanks in advance!

I think it is,...... I'm not sure what the going price is for these but you'd be easily saving somewhere in the area of $1000. - $1400.

+1

But as with any instrument (custom-shop or production-grade) play it before handing over your Platinum Card to the sales counselor.

Already done! I couldn't hold back. I'm on vacation, and won't get home until Monday... but it should be there waiting.

Of course I have 30 days to return it, but I'll have to pay shipping both ways which is fair considering the price.

I'll follow this post up with a description and some pictures once I have it and decide for sure I'm keeping it.

Not sure what year your RI was made, but as you can see by the attached link, which is for a used bass, you did well. Custom shop reissues are very solid basses, you will not be disappointed, at least I never have been.

Congrats on a nice bass purchase.

Yes, I've seen that bass on eBay - and I've also seen a few NOS '64's being sold through the talk-bass forums between 2100-2300. But some of those sales happened a few years ago so I think I probably did very well.

I'll eventually be putting my practically new Select Series bass on eBay starting at .99 with no reserve. I will certainly take a huge loss, but hopefully this will help make up for some of the loss...

  Why not keep it, and have one jazz strung in rounds while the other is strung in flats? You have to have at least one of each you know.

I agree with Linnin. Selects are absolutely worth holding onto. I can't tell you how badly I want a few back that I foolishly let go. Sell something else instead. Selects are hard to come by. Why take a loss on it? "It's Cheaper to Keep Her."

Yes Hang on to the Select !!... as Dave said they're hard to come by,.... I have a 2012 Select Jazz Bass that I'd never part with,... mine is starting to feel worked in,.... everytime I pick it up & play it ...it's a good feeling. I got mine by fluke,.. a guy ordered one through Long & McQuade music & reciceived it December 2012,.... in late January 2013 he returned it saying he didn't like it..( the fool !! there's nothing to dislike about the Select Jazz) & even though this guy only owned it for a month Long & McQuade now had to sell it as a used bass & I was quick to scoop it up for $1850.00 I knew I'd never come across one of these again for a while. :) Keep it !!

A select Jazz is special. Hang on to it, if at all possible.

I'm very curious to see how the new CS 64 will compare to my current Select Series. I'm a novice compared to the instruments I'm playing... I purchased my first bass in December, and it was an American Standard. After a month of solid playing, I knew the bass was going to be something I was going to stick with. That, along with learning about nitro lacquer vs. Poly finishes, I returned the bass and upgraded to the Select Series. It was a substantial improvement, even to my novice ears.

I know it would be best to keep both, but if I prefer the 64, my practical side will want to sell my Select Series.

If anyone is interested in a new Select Series for a great price, let me know!

You have pretty much nailed it - as I would have. That only means our two opinions are alike, not that they are right, or the only opinions out there.

I agree with all, the Select is a very cool bass, and you will have no trouble selling it, don't let it go cheap! - but if you can keep it, you should - it is that special, no kidding. I am sure a number of us would purchase it, should you decide to sell, but that is not a topic for this forum.

I think your decision is the correct one if you can only keep one of the two. The FCS64RI will give you years of service and, likely, a nice return on your investment, short and long term.

I am envious that you just started playing bass in December and already have two outstanding basses in your herd. You are bass blessed, no doubt.

Thanks for that - I return on Monday (tomorrow), the same day the new bass arrives, and of course I'm experiencing buyers remorse. Although I know 2500 for this new bass is a great price, for another 500 I could probably find a great early 70's vintage bass (which I ultimately want).

Not sure what to do!

Thanks again for the advice, it's a huge help.

P.S. I recently bought a 75 jazz bass on eBay for just under 3k, and turns out the neck was just past the point of being fixed with the truss rod adjustment, so I had to return it. Fortunately the owner was cooperative.

I'll have to decide quick...
