The "C" is showing up on Crafted in China Fenders.

Also to OP, Guitar Dater Project works great on vintage stuff but not so great on brand new stuff made since about 2010. In fact there is no Fender China database there at all.

Hi, thanks for reading.

I recently bought a second hand jazz with a serial number that starts in E followed by 9 and 4 digits.

The guitar features the lonhorn and deep cutaway to allow the 22 frets that is known to be on the so-called "boner" model.

The guitar also comes with the TBX tone control.

That odd serial number is what intrigues me. So, if there is a fellow Fender community member with a similar serial number, I would appreciate your comments.

Cheers,

It is a 1989 model. Most likely it was made to be EXPORTED to an off shore distributor. Export serials are formatted differently from serials on instruments for domestic distribution in order to lock exported instruments out of Fender warranty support. Fender's resource page and most online dating sources omit dating for any export instrument. The importing distributor is responsible for all support on all Fender products they import including serial number support, however you could email Fender Consumer Relations with your serial and see if they have any records on it and they might can tell you which distributor imported it and from there you could contact the distributor for further information. Their email is consumerrelations@fender.com . Specs on export models are sometimes slightly different including the fact that they are not shipped with a factory case. The importer/distributor uses locally sourced cases instead of the cases used in the USA. Since you are in London having a serial on a Fender that is in a different format than the Fender supported models is totally normal.

The Boners were discontinued in 1993, Fender brought back the traditional 20-fret design two years later with graphite neck reinforcements and a dual access bridge allowing string-thru and top-load mounting.

I bought mine second hand… probably I'm the fourth owner (!)

It was love at first sight… but then I got to know her better… quite wide string spacing… but nothing too bad… Tone is great… but is easy for me to say because I have flats on her.

Her unique body shape is really striking… and mine is sunburst! The TBX tone control is quite interesting because… well don't know the technicality but it boosts the highs and lows…

I'm on three projects at the moment playing indie rock, funk and prog rock… and it does magic.. what's yours?

Why do you think this model was discontinued?

This model was discontinued to leave the room for the newer designs reflecting the needs of many contemporary musicians. The new platform took place in July 1995, prompting a return to the traditional 20-fret design, the addition of graphite reinforcements for the necks and a new bridge allowing through-body and top-load string mounting.

The 1-piece maple neck was offered as a standard feature in 1997.

What do you mean by "the needs of many contemporary musicians?

I think this"boner' jazz balance perfectly, sounds awesome... and the deep cutaway with the 22 fret allows more freedom of soloing in the higher octaves.

Cheers mate
