I suppose you could pluck or strum with your thumb, which is also a softer sound, but unless you're used to doing that, it will tear it, or blister it up. I've also noticed with the thumb (unless you're used to it, once again,) it's a little more difficult moving between the strings, because you have to turn your hand to accommodate that movement.

Then again, that could be just me, since I'm sure my whole right hand technique is half arsed, from being self-taught. I never learned, or adapted to "proper" playing techniques, because I really never learned them. I've been winging it for the past 30 years. :P

The main regret for not adapting to a plectrum is it's a lot harder to play a 6-stringer without one, although there are so many people that have mastered that style. They're also guitarists to begin with, not some bassist trying to hack his way through it with those tiny strings that cut into you more than the big ones we're used to. I'm trying, though.

One of the things I've been working with lately is a 4 finger free stroke technique (thumb, index, middle, ring) a'la Matt Garrison, Hadrien Feraud, and Dominique Di Piazza. For me it is kind of a special effect technique like slapping or 2 handed tapping. The effect is kind of a thinner sound with a lot of attack. The benefits of the technique are your wrist stays straighter/at a more "neutral" position and if you keep your hand closer to the strings it is easier to just drop your hand a little and palm mute.

That's interesting. I've read about people using similar techniques. I've never tried doing that. I'd have to really train my brain to attempt something like that, after doing the same thing for 30 years.

Come to think of it I've been playing about 27 years. here are a couple of videos of what I'm talking about:

I like the sound of it but like I said for me it would be more of a special effect technique than an all the time go to technique. With the right delay settings those muted notes kind of sound like another layer of percussion.

Now that you mention that, I think John Entwistle utilized this technique.

Today I played the Am. Pro. Jazz, and it totally blew me away. I heard the sound today, I was hoping to hear from it. Like the Hell out of it big time!

The common denominator does seem to be the Ampeg.

It makes me wonder if that would have made a difference with any of the other basses you went through, if you had the same amp at the time. Sometimes when you're not to keen on a bass, a change in amps might factor in that.

You're about two days late on that thought. I did actually consider, that the Ampeg is what I should have been using for sometime, and several basses ago. It's not just a tube amp either. I had the Super Bassman that really didn't do it. It does however show me the V-4B tube Ampeg is the sound I was looking for. It's only 100 watts, but it's a great 60's 100 watts sound. I'm also believing the SVT-212AV has a major impact on the amp's sound I prefer.

I'm thinking that could be the right formula for everything. There's definitely many factors that can go into your ideal sound, including something as simple and basic as the brand and type of strings.

You know I love the sound, and the feel of the Nylons on my basses. I'm really into it all finally. It took a bit of time.

I think I'm about 75% there, but who knows if something comes along and throws a wrench in the works and I'll be back to square one. Musicians can be a fickle bunch when it comes to gear. :P

They've been really sneaky with that, too. This year's NAMM had quite a few things thrown at us. :P
