Yeah, I imagine that would be problematic, especially with having back orders piling in.

You hit it. That was a major part of the production problem with the Ruby finish.

That's why they also discontinued a lot of their models, because they got so behind at one point with orders. Do you remember like 10 years ago, or so, they were constantly out of stock online?

Somewhat. I was disappointed they discontinued the 4003 fretless.

Yeah, that looked like a cool bass. I've never even seen one of those, other than on their site.

To my recollection, the fretless 4003 was a pretty rare Ric.

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw one for real, other than the one listed on the site also.

Yeah, out of curiosity, I tried to even look for one online, but didn't find anything. If anyone has them, they're not selling them right now.

It does sound pretty rare.

There was a 1973 4001 model that is fretless, but I'm wondering if that's even was the original design, or if they even made fretless models back then? I know Fender had a fretless P-Bass at the time, but I'd have to look through any Ric sites that I have linked to find out, if possible.

Must be. All I know about them, they weren't around enough to get one.

I guess fretless might be kind of a niche thing, anyway. I used to have a Hohner Jazz Bass copy that was fretless, but that was the extent of that, other than rarely coming across one in some shop somewhere. The coolest one I've ever had the chance to play was the Warwick Jack Bruce signature model fretless. It had LED fret markers and the whole bit. Of course, it cost $3800, and that was back in 1994 or 1995. Yeah, I was going to be able to buy one of those. :P At least I had the chance to play it. That's the cool thing about music shops, sometimes. You can often get a chance of playing on stuff that you can't afford, unless you win the lotto, or make a boat load of cash. Then again, that could get depressing, since you can't afford to buy it.

That's cool having a fretless Hofner. I bet that Jack Bruce Warwick was something to see, and play.
