I was casually looking at Jazz Basses yesterday. I was watching this new band which the bassist was playing on what looked like a 70's Jazz, and thought that sounded pretty good. I still do play the Squier Jazz, albeit not in a practice or live situation. I still do need to get it fixed. By the way, the Ibanez bass is fixed, so at least that's one that's taken care of.

If it takes one at a time to be able to fix em', that's the way to go. A fixed bass is better than not being able to be played.

Come to find out about the Ibanez, the pots were just dirty. They also put new strings on it, and set it up. They're probably D'Addario rounds (I had the strings that originally came with the Schecter on it,) which is typical of what stores will use, unless they changed that from back in the day. The bass is still with the guitarist in Boston, so we haven't gotten it back yet. The next time we go there, we should. D'Addario strings are pretty decent, anyway. The reason I got into Rotosound had to do with that whole British Invasion thing, and The Who made a jingle for them. :P I do like the way they sound, as well.

I'm thinking logically, the Squier Jazz should be looked at next, or maybe the Peavey. Although, the only thing wrong with the Peavey is the ground hum. Then again, they can also set it up for me, and for some reason it starts that weird buzz again if they do, they might fix that. Which one you think I should have looked at next? There's also the Fender Precision Bass Lyte, which might have had the same issue as the Ibanez, but that one does need a good set up. It's been through the ringer.

I would leave that one up to you. You probably have a favorite one to play out of the bunch. I think D'Addario strings are strung on Ibanez from the factory. A couple of other brands string D'addario from the factory.

Yeah, it's also up to my girlfriend, too. She wanted to get the Ibanez fixed first, since that is her main bass, so she might want another one fixed next, as well. Either way, eventually it will all be squared away.

That's the important thing, that you fix what you can. 8)

I suspect any of them shouldn't be some major repair, so at least there's that. It's just picking the next one to have done. The Peavey technically works, but has that ground hum issue, which I imagine is just a matter of connecting a wire of some sort, and I can play the Jazz plugged in, but very carefully, because of the short. It's not like it's completely dead. Maybe I should play around with those (there's the Fender Precision Lyte, as well,) and feel out which one I like playing the best, and go with that.

That's probably the best way to decide which way to go on the next bass for repair. The humm issue could be the way to go for the next in the repair line.

I played both the Squier Jazz and Peavey yesterday, and it was a tough choice, since both of them play good, but maybe I might go with the Peavey, since it has a maple fretboard, and the basses I do have working are rosewood. Hell, that's just a good reason as any to pick it to be next to be fixed. :P

It actually has a good, solid neck on it, sans any past issues, which I hope don't return. It's the reason I got it in the first place. I've never had to file any fret ends on it, either. Maybe that's because it's maple, and they don't tend to shrink like the rosewood does with the weather, when it gets cold and dry. Plus, it does have that snap of the maple fretboard, which I know you know what I'm talking about.

Maple does have advantages with it's coating over the unprotected Rosewood.

I guess rosewood has a tendency to be effected more by temperature change. I think someone around here was talking about that awhile back.

Yeah, that is somewhat of a rule of thumb about Rosewood. The same as it dries out, or cracks without some light oil treatments.

I have this butcher block treatment, which is supposed to moisturize wood, and protect it. I put that stuff on the fretboard after I had to file the fret ends down, and left some scuff marks there. It cleaned it right up, and polished up the wood, too. It seemed to really help that out with any dryness.
