Hello everyone! Good to be here. I'm about to pull the trigger on a used Standard Jazz Bass and I'm wondering if it's normal to have different dates on parts of the bass? The bass in question has a neck pocket dated July 06 1997 and bolt-on maple neck dated July 02 1997. I'm just thinking the bass was "waiting" for other components to be ready and put on. Thanks a lot! Cheers. :)

Varying dates of manufacture among the various parts of a Fender product are a very common event and have been since the founding of the original Fender Electric Instrument Company nearly seventy years ago. I've got a bonafide-and-all-original Deluxe Reverb Amp made in the 4th week of 1968 that has transformers built in late '65. It's the same with the guitars and basses though not usually not with such disparate manufacturing dates.

Maybe it is original and maybe it isn't. 5 years is something of a new world record for body/neck date disparity. Might never find out either. I wouldn't worry about it too much since you can't change the situation. If you have a good feeling about it and it plays well then go ahead and buy it, but I'd probably NOT pay a premium for it. Most CBS era stuff isn't going to appreciate to the stratosphere like the pre-CBS stuff so I'd not worry about it too much. If what you want is a good playing and good sounding instrument and it is a good playing and good sounding instrument I wouldn't let it bother me too much if I wanted it to play. I wouldn't consider it an investment or collectible though.

I think some of you are misreading the original post.

They are 3 days apart.

July 2, 1997 was a Wednesday. Friday the 4th was a national holiday, and the 6th was the following SUNDAY. Why are they stamping necks on a sunday? Who knows. But in any case there were only 3 business days separating them which seems to me to be a record for CLOSE dates, since the necks and bodies are completed by separate teams (as we well know).

Tempest in a teapot, but let's not worry the OP unnecessarily.

Bodies are made one day. They make let's say 100 bodies. They made let's say 142 necks on the same day. The left over 42 necks won't have a body with the same date. They go get pick ups from the parts dept that are 3 weeks old to use on the bodies that will be made the next day. Manufacturing . It happens everywhere from Toaster parts to Rocket parts from cheese boxes to cheese. I had spaghetti once. :D

This is common, I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Yeah I misread the dates. Thought "July 02" neck date was 2002 and missed the year as it was on a line break. It is more of a record for close neck and body dates. Almost has to be correct. I've seen factory original stuff a year or more apart, but not 5. This is only a couple of days, no problem here.

First, Brotherdave, thanks for the great site with tons of useful info!

I was wrong earlier. After thinking about it, and using info I learned on this forum, the neck stamp was probably "02 July 1997".

The 02 is the Neck Code for a Jazz Bass neck, then you get the month and year.

Following this logic, the body had "06 July 1997" which is a body code of 06, not
the date. So what he has is a Jazz Bass neck, and a Jazz Bass body, both made
in July 1997. Which explains why I was wrong about them stamping bodies on a Sunday.

So it's still not a problem for the OP, but if anybody else is reading this we might as well get the correct info out there.

True. If you put the code in the order in which it was actually stamped it would have helped. LOL

Even today if you visit the Fender Corona manufacturing facility you will see bass bodies stacked on racks awaiting necks. Since the bodies are much easier to make they are stockpiled ahead of time. This has been standard procedure since the first Precision bass was assembled in 1951 so the difference between dates re: necks and bodies can vary by months. I have a very early Precision with neck pocket date of Oct. 1951 and neck date of Jan. 1952.
