Hi guys,
I have had this great bass for 20 years now but am considering selling it and thus need your help:

All I know is that it's a Fender Jazz Bass. Original pickups. Made at the Fullerton Plant Factory in 1977. Serial number S736776. Original case included but case is worn. Light wood base. Mother of Pearl and copper details.

BUT...

Do you know what materials this bass is made off – or do you have any other information about this specific bass?

And what would you estimate it to?

Look at images here: http://oneclevercode.com/blog/2013/03/04/guatemala-photo-assignment/

Thanks in advance,

Maria

:!: :!: :!: :!: :!: For whatever reason I am not clicking on that link. Somebody else do it and let me know if you got hacked. :!: :!: :!: :!:

1st--short neck ?
2nd-- if you have had the bass for 20 years and if you play it you could certainly be able to know what one is worth by searching e bay. Plus you know exactly how to post a description of a bass like you own a music store. Just comes off a little odd/ fishy.
3rd- I could be all wrong. But I still ain't clicking that link.

Post the photos here and we'll look. Nobody is clicking that link. I'd say that due the fact that it is a short scale neck Fender Fullerton Jazz Bass that it is almost a certain fake or a modified instrument. Either way 20 years ago you got rooked. So far as I know there has never been a short scale Fender Jazz Bass.

I think that you have a 1977 Jazz Bass neck on an undeterrmined make body.

The body has replacement parts and may or may not be a Fender.

Bridge is wrong, bass pickup is wrong and the pick guard is wrong and the bridge cover should have a large F impressed into it and yours looks generic.

AAAHHH!! the weekly "Help me figure out what type of Fender Bass I have ?" post,... was this a family member's bass that's been sitting in the basement for a couple of decades & you've decided to sell it ......just a curious question,.... because if it was your personal bass that you personally owned & played you'd know the history of it.
(just saying..)

There's a few things odd about this bass,... like the Bridge cover not having a big Fender "F" on it & the thumb rest is in the wrong position,..... This bass needs a cleaning & a fresh set of strings & most probably a setup if it hasn't been used in a couple of decades,..... I'd even go as far as getting a period correct black pickguard & loose the thumb rest (put it in the case.) can we see a picture of the back of this bass? It should have the 3 bolt Micro tilt neck plate with a Fender "F" on it (it does have the bullet truss rod),..... you'll get a lot of your questions answered if you take the bass to a professional to clean it , change the strings, set the intonation & check the truss rod to see if it needs a tweek,.... you can also have them take the neck off to see what dates are stamped on the body & neck for authenticity,...... the body is most probably Alder or Ash, & the neck is Maple. I can also tell you that the Neck pickup is definately not original,...just look at the poles ( I also noticed that there's a pickup cover in the case)..... I'm gonna guess that the neck pickup was swapped out & a Dimarzio put in,....Swapping out Fender pickups for Dimarzio's was very common back in the day. 1980's & the volume knobs are not original period correct Fender Jazz bass knobs either...... Anyway good Luck.

Hi Maria,

I think BC and James are spot on, even the screws are wrong.

If the neck and body are original, you could try to bring it back to spec, but that would be costly as 1977 parts are expensive, so it would have to be a labor of love. Even then, it would still be a refin, player quality bass with a value around $1000, maybe a bit more to a motivated buyer.

As is, and assuming the neck is original, that is where your value is. To the right buyer the neck could be worth in excess of $500. An original body, around $350. (When you check prices, find the "sold for" price as the asking prices are many times a bit ridiculous)

To sell the bass "as is" you should disclose all known issues. Since there are so many, I would advise taking it to a luthier and having it taken apart and inspected so you know what is original, and what is not. That way you can honestly describe the bass and feel good about selling it. The luthier would likely have access to pricing guides that would help you determine a fair price, too.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your replies.

I got this bass from my dad when I was 15 (22 years ago). I remember that we bought it from some old hippie here in Copenhagen, but I don't remember any other details.

I do remember, however, that the price was around $1800.

I will go ahead and take it to a Fender retailer and see if they can help me out.

Despite a rather cynical tone in this forum I thanks you for your time. It's much appreciated.

Hi Maria,

Sorry if you think the tone is cynical...I think everyone is just trying to help.

Perhaps the bass is worth more where you live, but currently, according to the Vintage Guitar Magazine's Official 2014 Price Guide, if your bass was all original and in excellent vintage condition, it would be worth $2100-$2500. A refinish typically reduces value by about 50%. I feel the values I gave you are fair, for the U.S.. Perhaps your market is different.

I wish you the best.

Hi Maria, My apologies if you find us to be cynical,.. this is not our intention,.....you asked us for our opinion of what you thought this bass was worth & we took the time to kindly & honestly give you our individual opinion's on this Bass' value,.... our opinion would be no different than if you brought it to a pawn shop/ Consignment store or if a prospective buyer was looking at it ... fact is all things have a value based upon the condition they're in,... no different than used car's, appliance's ETC,.... the better the shape it's in, the more it's worth.... anyway good luck & all the best. :)

Please note that I don't find all replies cynical and also please note that I'm grateful for any information I can get.

I just don't see the reason in comments like this: "if you have had the bass for 20 years and if you play it you could certainly be able to know what one is worth by searching e bay. Plus you know exactly how to post a description of a bass like you own a music store. Just comes off a little odd/ fishy."

To answer a few questions:

The thumb rest in in need of a new screw, that's why it's in the wrong position.

I'll add images of the back of the bass.

The Silver Plate says: "Fender Micro Neck Adjust PAT.35500496"

When taking off the neck to see what dates are stamped on the body & neck for authenticity I get this:

I am inclined to think the neck is legit, but I would like to also see a picture of the neck heel (butt).

I have mixed emotions about the body. It appears correct, but there has been some material forcibly removed from the bottom of the neck pocket, after painting, and certainly nothing that Fender would have done. A couple mystery holes, perhaps one on the lower rear side (as pictured) of the pocket too? I will have to pass on an opinion on the body and leave it for someone with more knowledge.
