Gents,
Are there forum members who have any critiques on the new Vintage Reissue '64 Basses? I'm thinking about buying one (which would be my 9th bass-the madness must stop!).
Also, does anyone believe Jazz basses with its thinner neck requires more of a neck adjustment when re-stringing to flats?

Well compared to my Precisions, I don't think Jazz basses need to be adjusted more.

But having said that, higher tension flatwound strings allow you to tweak them down for lower action due to that tension. You don't have to,IMO, though.

I played that model '64 in Guitar Center and it was nice except for a bad factory adjustment. Considering what Fender said about the "ultra thin neck" I would have thought it to be thinner. My Road Worn Jazz neck is a bit thinner than the '64 AV.
Still a very,very nice instrument.

Do you think the neck is any thinner than the '62 Jazz reissue? What was the bad factory adjustment?

FYI: Flatwound strings of the same gauge are less tension than round wound strings.

Jazz basses only specify the nut width. The rest of the neck is hand shaped and they will vary from neck to neck even among the same model.

I hear ya, I just got my ninth bass & though I'm happy I'm feeling it's gotta stop with Bass # 9 :( ...... Ahhh who am I kidding !!
Anyway I haven't tried the AV Re-issue 64 Jazz bass but If I can make a comparison to my Jaco Fretless which is based on a '62 Jazz Bass,..... I went from using the stock Fender 9050M Flats & switched to Rotosound Nickel plated steel RB 45's & the only adjustment that was needed was the intonation at the bridge,..... I'm not totally sure but I think Rounds have more tension than flats,.. all in all there shouldn't be a problem & I don't think the neck will require more of an adjustment,... :)

Rickenbacker used to limit their warranty on the 4001 bass to the use of Flatwound strings because they are lower tension.
The Ric 4001s started having neck failures after the use of roundwound strings became more prevalent in the early 70's.

I know that modern strings may vary but the rule of thumb is that flats are less tension than rounds.

Hey Wick sorry for the delay as I have been away for a bit.

I would say the '64 RI had a thinner neck compared to the AVRI '62 I had. Of course the necks vary on those AVRIs depending on the year manufactured. The Road Worn J has the fastest Jazz neck I have ever played.

The '64 I tried had really high action which made one or more of the strings hit the neck pickup cover and caused an impossibly loud screeching/ring throughout the store. I could not play it for long due to this pathetic setup. I understand temp changes affect basses/setups but this was way out of spec. It turned me off enough to 'save' me from owning 11 basses! So I only have 10 now but that can change at any time (glad the wife does not read these forums!)
