OK, this is a fairly common subject I'll admit to that hehe :)

Thing is though!
I have a fender jazz bass that has a serialnumber 353037, which means that it's should be from around 72/73 right?
thing is the back plate is a three bolt on piece, so it should rather be a 1975 bass right? or wrong?
I'm confused here, I hope there is someone out there with the technical and historical now how to help me here :)
Kind regards johan

The info I have says the 3 bolt plate started in 72 on the Telecaster bass and later in 74 on the Jazz bass. The plate has the large "F" and the serial number above it. The 3 bolt continued until 1981. In 1976 the serial number went to the headstock.

Maybe the guitar has a Telecaster bass neck plate which seems to agree with the serial number you posted. The serial number on the picture I have of a Telecaster bass neck plate is 351591.

Yeah or a misrepresentation. This is another example of the need to post pics so our expert staff can examine the facts as seen in relation to the photos. Shedding light on the subjects in the topics here is always bolstered by the additions of the photos. Another important aspect is that the photos should be taken in clear bright light. The important things to take pictures of : Full frontal body and neck, close ups of areas in question by the OP, i.e. = neckplate, serial number, any differences in wood color etc. at key places on the guitar and anything to help identify the guitar = pickups, tuners , logos, bridges, pickguards, electronics (when necessary).

The interchangeable nature of Fender parts has led to a lot of confusion among instrument buyers who are not up on the possibility of something like this happening.

The problem with this is that somebody is usually trying to hide a hot bass by swapping serial numbers with their Telecaster bass of 1972.

Have you checked the bass for other dates in the cavities or on the pots?

Please post some pictures of your bass and we can help with the age approximation.
