Getting to this thread a little late -

In 1963, there were more opportunities for bassists than there were for jazz tenor saxophone artists, so I sold the horn and bought a '63 Fender sunburst P-Bass (which I WISH I still had). Been doing this for 51 years and still having a blast with it... and still on the road each November.

The way that I take care of and maintain my basses, that '63 would be worth a chunk of change these days. :(

I never really thought about iy. After the Alien abduction things were kind of fuzzy for the next eight or ten years.

O.K., I'll quit.

I always liked the bass, but was always involved with people who needed a guitar player. The last real band i was involved with had me on lead. Once that died, I got away for a long time, in which, I got married, had a daughter and led a normal life.

The way the band died left such a sour taste that I couldn't even open the case. I got back to bass and haven't looked back.

I did get a Stratocaster a couple of years ago for Christmas and the old magic still lives. That's not a good thing. The lifestyle is not good for a normal life.

Was there a question to be answered here?

The lifestyle of being in a band is not good for a normal life---I agree. It's not normal for me- that's for sure- anymore I'm just getting tired of the people. Always some kind of stuff going on and not always good.

I ended up on bass thusly:

16 year old me: Guitar is cool! I want one!

ALL my friends: We all play guitar. If you get a bass, we can jam!

Me: Okay!

That was 30 years ago.

My big brother was an amazing guitar player and his friends were a drummer and a keyboard player.
One day I was being the typical bratty little brother and wanted to hang out with my hero, so I picked up the Fender Jazz bass our school had laying around and well, they were blown away because it was just natural for me!

Here it is 35 years later and I can't imagine not being a bass player. I have been in bands where I played guitar but that was only because I was coming into the band as a the lead singer and well, I can't just sing, I have to be playing something or I forget the lyrics...LOL

ABS :D

I was 15 and I got the bug for bass after giving up my paper route and using some of the money that I had earned to buy a Hagstrom bass and an Ampeg SB-12 amp. I couldn't afford a Fender. I made a deal with the guy who sold me my amp. He had to find me a bass teacher or I wouldn't buy his amp. He found me a great teacher who gave me a great foundation for learning bass and music theory. He also had the first Fender Jazz bass that I had ever held and he let me try to play it at the time. It was a 1968 Sunburst Jazz Bass with both covers on and it was beautiful. This was fall of 1968.

I am of the opposite opinion as Afprod. I feel that musical knowledge is the best enhancement for self expression on your instrument and bass is no exception.
I know you still want to play with feeling and create a great groove, but those skills are more of what you are born with than what you can be taught.

I started my first band with a drummer friend in the Summer of '69.
It was a great time and I have never stopped playing although I gave up bands for about 18 years while my kids grew up.
