I played drums in the first band I was in. I knew how to play cords on guitar too. My friends' Mom bought him a Fender Precision and I taught him how to play it. I was dumb enough at 14 to not realize I had just taught someone how to play bass guitar. It took a couple years for me to figure out I was a bass player. Duh........ ( Give me a break-- I was a kid.)

None of thee above.
I was taking lessons for guitar and the music school had a band program (Like rock bands--although they also had jazz bands/mini orchestras/whatever)
But there was a pre-requisite to being in the bands if you were a guitar player-you had to also take bass lessons.

That's how I wound up learning to play bass, and I was reluctant to do so, but I wanted to do the band thing, so a bass it was.

I discovered I liked it, and I kept at it
I'm still primarily a guitar player, but as time goes by I like bass more than I used to and I'm finally getting half decent at it.

 In 1964 I was 10. I watched The Beatles live on The Ed Sullivan Show. Paul McCartney...left-handed...bass. My four string left-handed future was already in motion, but I wouldn't realize it for 5 more years. Half a lifetime. 8)

I found myself listening to the bass parts of songs, and in late 1968 I moved from guitar, to bass. I surely don't regret it either.

I started out playing guitar and singing as a kid. When I discovered blues and jazz I found out I liked the bass lines better and I bought a '63 Fender Precision. Within a year I got in my first real band as a bass player, playing rock and roll and blues.

I never really thought about iy. After the Alien abduction things were kind of fuzzy for the next eight or ten years.

O.K., I'll quit.

I always liked the bass, but was always involved with people who needed a guitar player. The last real band i was involved with had me on lead. Once that died, I got away for a long time, in which, I got married, had a daughter and led a normal life.

The way the band died left such a sour taste that I couldn't even open the case. I got back to bass and haven't looked back.

I did get a Stratocaster a couple of years ago for Christmas and the old magic still lives. That's not a good thing. The lifestyle is not good for a normal life.

Was there a question to be answered here?

Us kids formed a rock band. Trouble was, no one had instruments. We chose what we warned to play and I chose bass. One by one we got instruments and learned them, but we broke up before we ever played.

The next band, also guys from the neighborhood, actually played out and I was hooked.

I have never wanted to play another band instrument and only goof around on the others.

I got my first guitar from the five and dime but it wasn't the summer of 69. I was about 10 when I got my first guitar. Taught myself a few chords. Never really took it to heart. Took 6 years of piano lessons. Still the passion wasn't there. When I was 19 I borrowed a bass and amp from a friend who wasn't using it at the time. I've been hooked ever since. First two songs I was half way good at were "Another One Bites the Dust" and the theme from "The Dukes of Hazard".

At 13 yrs old a friend of mine was getting guitar lessons. Just listening to him play I knew I could play that instrument. Weird. It was like I had played it before.

I then bought my own acoustic 6 string and picked it all up by ear. Within a year of learning and listening I started noticing the bass in all this music I was absorbing.
I just fell in love with that low end goodness.

I cut lawns and saved for a Precision bass copy (can't remember the brand) and worked my *** off for a year passing on socializing and sports. By the end of my freshman year of highschool I was in 2 bands with one of them working steady doing proms/school dances.

My love affair with bass has never faded since. By my senior year in highschool with the help of a highschool music teacher I was offered a scholarship to a prestigious music college. Being a stupid kid I passed on offer to pursue a career as a rock star.

Yes I regret decisions of my youth but still play and love the bass and always will.

Wow, now that is a story, the music college part, but you are probably better off. Bass is a feeling and learning curve, not an education unless you want to teach music. I bet the same can be said for many great bassists. Run down the list, how many attended music college?

One of my daughters, a soprano/alto, went to college to learn more, but found all the theory a bit off-putting. She has a remarkable voice, hitting all the highs in Phantom and yet being able to drop down to sultry blues. Her voice, without training beyond first year of college, can make me misty eyed. I wish I had half her talent, with or without formal training.

I am a big fan of education, but I am also a fan of doing what feels good. Totally untrained, I enjoy music without reservation. My playing is well received, but that really doesn't matter. I do it for the pure enjoyment.
