Hello all - I'm beginner bass player, and started way beyond my abilities with my first bass. I got a good deal on a new old stock Select Series bass, and really like it but I'm not crazy about the way it looks (although I love the idea of the lacquer finish).

Would it be a downgrade to return it, and go with an American Vintage 64 or 74? My reasoning is, if I go with a sunburst version, I won't have to worry about dings, scratches and dents - it will only look better. In fact, I could probably find a used one and even save money!

Thanks in advance.

Well I've decided against the Vintage 74 because for some reason it's got an epoxy coating. I've got my eye on the Vintage 70's Hot Rod (flash lacquer finish) - this seems to be a nice choice for a new bass.

But I've also been looking at some real vintage jazz basses from the early 70's. Although they're very expensive, I love the fact that they probably won't depreciate.

Do these basses play very differently than the newer styles I'm looking at?

Thanks!

I just put a deposit on a Candy Apple Red Vintage Hot Rod 70s Jazz Bass,.. I should be picking it up in the next week or two,...... I was originally going to buy an American Standard Jazz Bass in Olympic white with tort Guard & maple fret board like the one that
Mr. Nylon bought but then I saw that Candy Apple red beauty & couldn't resist
& surprisingly I found the U neck very comfortable to play :)

When you get that Candy Apple Red Vintage Hot Rod 70s Jazz Bass, pics, lots of pics. Way to go James! 8) That U neck is somewhat similar to a Rickenbacker's 4003 shape.

WOW I didn't know that the U neck was like the Rickenbacker 4003,... I love the Vintage 74 Jazz Bass pickup & 63 Pbass pickup that comes with this unit & the Fender/Basass II bridge,... I'll definitely get you some Pictures,... at the very least I'll PM them to you. :)
This Bass is extremely Striking !! the photo advertising it here on the Fender website doesn't do it Justice..

I thought it felt that way to me anyway. Maybe not.
