I got out the Jazz bass and looked thru my CDs. Yeah I'm bored.
Anyway I figured there's always room for learning something no matter how good we think we are there's always someone better or it just doesn't matter. What? Either way here is a list of some virtuoso bass players you may have not heard of. You can probably search any of these names and something will come up. I basically play Rock music but once I started listening to bass players like these guys I learned a lot-- even if it was only that I learned I can't play like that.

It's not about whether or not you like the style of music or not-- it's about how good these guys are at what they do. :D

Trey Gunn played with King Crimson, long after I saw them, but still a cool memory. The Moody Blues are my favorite band to see in concert, as you all probably know from previous posts, sorry, in fact we are seeing them in Sarasota next month. Grahame Edge lives close to me, nice guy, and I understand the two other originals, Justin and John, have places in the Tampa area.

But off the track. King Crimson was like the wanna be Moody Blues, and I don't mean that with any disrespect. They went into the orchestral sound, they even had one of those early synthesizers that ran on tape reels, a mellotron (?) like Mike Pinder used with MB.

I thoroughly enjoyed their music, but Wikipedia says Trey did not join the band until WAY after I saw them. Great band though.

Thanks for getting the thought waves going.

PS. Totally unrelated. Super Bassman gets its first outdoor gig tomorrow. Really looking forward to it.

I'm thinking King Crimson was around before the Moody Blues. Right?

Trey Gunns song "Eyes Wide Open" is pretty good- it has the full King Crimson treatment . Saw King Crimson in 2004 (maybe). They kicked it. John Paul Jones opened for them.

I make sure to have a musical open mind. It's important. It's the same with Art. I can look at all kinds of paintings even if I like some of them more than others. I wouldn't be fair to my learning about Art if I said "I only want to see Van Gogh and snub all the others". Music is Art. Or is it :?:

The Moody Blues were playing back in 63-64 and even had a hit before bringing Justin Hayward on board. But the biggie to me was 67 when they released Days of Future Passed. What an album! Still one of my favorites from that era...perhaps thee favorite.

I am not sure if there was an earlier assembly of King Crimson, but what I can find says they first formed in 68, when MB was already going strong.

Summed up in one word: the Mellowtron.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellotron

"The Mellotron's popularity greatly increased following its prominent use by The Beatles and by subsequent groups including The Moody Blues and King Crimson, as well as being a notable instrument in progressive rock generally."

Don't forget Led Zepplin. The twin flutes on "Stairway To Heaven"??? None other than rockstar bass player John Paul Jones on the Mellotron. Yep. It's true.

The Mellotron was the the very first sampling keyboard. Real acoustic instruments well recorded and then transfer onto monoral endless tape loop cartridges that would later become 8-track carts.

Ahhhhh the Mellotron! Would there have been progressive rock without it????

Felix Pappalardi played Mellotron on Cream's "Badge", on the Goodbye Cream album.

I didn't know the Beatles used one, but it figures. I know MB were influenced by them, as were darn near everybody, but MB really made it their signature, and stuck with it. Down to three originals now, and Grahame turned 70, but still cool to catch on stage.

I didn't know the Moody Blues were around in 63. I guess that beats King Crimson by about 5 years or something like that. I didn't know there was mellowtron on Badge. I'm going to have to give it a listen again- like the 1000th time !! We all probably played that in someones garage- basement- living room etc backinnaday!
We had a music class in High School that was Moody Blues- Days of Future Passed- that was in the early/ almost mid 70's. The music teacher didn't look like a Hippie but he sure was into that album. He went over every song- broke it all down- explained the meaning to everything - just got into it! It was a two or 3 class deal. Moodys were okay to me and my friends but we would listen to bands like Black Sabbath, Mountain, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Led Zep. Oh Yeah!!!

Always liked Jeff Berlin's playing, especially on Lumpy Jazz.

Yes!! Lumpy Jazz was one of the first songs I was checking out. Berlin is a master! Some of the runs are simply incredible. His home base is in FLA. I'm sure you knew that. Anyway Jeff Berlin kills on bass. :D

I was in a little town in the middle of Florida- Sebring or the other one- - but there was a Jazz festival going on and I got to see Berlin live. They were the best band there for sure.

Florida had a rock connection unknown to many, in the 60's. Mike Pinera for one.

I liked your list. I'd add Stuart Zender of Jamiroquai. Lots of people have forgotten about them. He's a truly amazing player. Just brilliant.
