I just got this in - it's a little beat up, but will clean up nicely - and will be a solid player:

Good eye - yeah, they're EMGs... I wouldn't have changed the originals for 'em, but they don't sound bad at all...

Jazz Bass?
Looks like a Precision to me.
In P/J configuration.
Can't read the headstock.
Definitely a P body.

Either way, congrats on the new acquisition.

Yeah, I know - I'd call it a P Bass with P/J pups, but Fender called it a Jazz Bass Special... I'll see if I can get a decent pic of the headstock...

Nice, I'm looking at getting a fretless bass--this one would have been tempting, although right now I ned the lines where the frets would be.

Enjoy!

The Jazz Bass Special, Made in Japan (circa 1985-1991) it had a P-Bass body with Jazz bass neck with P/J set up & Black hardware,........ Nice Bass,..... the volume knobs had the Fender "F" logo on them,..... The current MIM Duff McKagan model is based on Duff's 1986 Jazz Special,......You've got a nice Jazz Special .... I would think that the fretless one's would be hard to find,.......this bass is keeper & worth a little TLC :) Congrats !!
There was also an active version available called The Power Jazz Special.

Thanks - I'm probably going to get some black HB2 tuners for it, and work some touch up magic on the body and headstock... Maybe some black strings, for a total blacked out look...

It has the dots on top of the neck - I actually wanted an unlined fretless, 'cause I dig the look...

Thanks, James - I think the factory fretless version probably is a bit more rare than the fretted version... I wasn't going to buy another bass, since I finally got down to an even dozen - then this one popped up, and tempted me into making it lucky #13, hahaha!!! Besides, it filled several empty niches in my modest Fender collection: MIJ, P/J, and fretless - how could I refuse???

There's no way to say No to a find like this,.....as I said She's a keeper,.......I have 7 Fender Basses in my Arsenal & 1 Ibanez Acoustic Bass,..... & soon to add another Fender as recently I've been itching for an 2013 American Standard Jazz bass,...Olympic White with Tort pick guard & maple fretboard,...... :)

The Power Jazz Bass Special was a souped-up variation of the Jazz Bass Special with a 22-fret neck, reverse split-coil humbucker and active electronics.

Controls included master volume, TBX, 3-way pickup toggle, frequency sweep and an active tone enhancer with passive, low and mid frequency boost modes.

(pictured bass is not mine).

One of these huge-sounding beasts was built for Duff by former CS Masterbuilder Fred Stuart.
