I just read that John Entwhistle played "My Generation" on a sunburst Jazz Bass. I'd always though it was a Precision or a Dan. But of course that explains the growl and snarl of that bass.

Hmmmmm, looks like a Precision Slab that was made for the British market. John ha a number of these, and, used the pickups in Frankenstein. The original "My Generation" was done on a Danelectro. Being that he couldn't find the same strings that came with it, and having bought out the entire supply of them available, he went to a Jazz next.

Didn't make any difference, he was The Ox! A master of his craft and the greatest bass guitarist of all time.

Just for the record, I'm right about this and won't adknowledge any mindless blather from those who would try to contest it.

You may be right, and I'm no expert. I'm just relating what I read, and it was an article by Fender's people, for whatever that's worth.

My reply wasn't aimed at you ch willie, what you read was true, John Entwistle had an incredible number of basses, he used them all. The more you research, you'll find that a Precision bass was used on almost all of the most memorable Who hits.

Thanks.

Yes, I know he favored the Precision. That's why I was shocked about the Jazz Bass on "My Generation."

There ya go,.....The Ox used a Dan Electro on My Generation,....I always thought it was a P-Bass but if Oxfan says it's a DanElectro I'm not going to dispute it ......Entwhistle was a Bass pioneer, an innovator & a master of the Bass guitar...Glad I got to see him live on 2 occaisions.. :)

I loved everything he did. :(

Considering that he changed strings every day, there has to be some out there, That is now my QUEST! To find at least one to frame!

As far as what he strived for as the "perfect" sound, this is pretty close. I say this by having heard him discuss it on various dvd's.

Enjoy!

Yes, and he said the Dan was down, so he went to the Jazz Bass for "My Generation." Got to be how he got that growl.
