I recently purchases an American Deluxe Jazz bass with the activev and passive electronics. But when I adjust the tone in passive mode, I can't hear any difference. Bass full and treble right down, no difference from treble up and bass down. Npo difference in neck or bridge pickup also. There is a difference in actrive mode.
Can there be a problem, is that the way it is, or should I have it looked at? I just receivevd it a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks.

Normal!

There is no tone control in passive mode. The tone controls only work in active mode.

Not true.

The American Deluxe Jazz Bass has a passive tone control which works only in passive mode.

This feature is not present on the Select Active Jazz and the Marcus Miller signature series.

Must be a new feature, didn't used to have one. So Chromeface would rickynedg, the original poster, needs to start a warranty claim? Since his doesn't have one?

Did some cursory checking and it seems the passive tone control feature was added sometime around 2010, so if this is a used instrument older than 2010 it might not have a passive tone control. So until we know the model year I really can't say. I should have asked first thing whether new or used and if used asked what model year. Think that matters here.

Older Deluxes were all-active beasts. They came with a 22-fret neck and an abalone-dot inlaid fingerboard.

The new hybrid circuitry was introduced in March 23, 2010.

We need a couple of photos to ID the OP's axe.

Yes The 2010 -to Current American Deluxe P-bass & Jazz bass both have passive tone control,.....My 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 has the passive tone control & it's very subtle .......I remeber all reviews that came out in 2010 regarding the American Deluxe Basses all lauded to the fact that the tone control & Bass & treble controls were all suble in how they adjusteded the sound of the bass .........maybe the Bass is a slightly used post 2010 model & maybe there's a loose wire.

It's also present on the Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass(there's no tone control on the Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass & only the volume for the pickups work in passive but in active you have Bass, treble & Mid knobs that all work),......& as I've said many times before I used both my Marcus Miller Bass & Reggie Hamilton Bass in Passive mode most of the time & I really don't miss not having a tone control... especially My Marcus Miller Jazz Bass ...it has a lot of bite in passive mode with no tone control & remember in active mode the Marcus Miller bass only has active Bass & active treble knobs,.....there is no tone control knob on the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass.

Here is how the controls work.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I've seen this photo of Stanley Clarke playing a pre-2010 American Deluxe Jazz Bass modded with N3s and post-2010 electronics.

I think this mod is easy to do but unfortunately apart the pickups Fender doesn't sell the necessary components to modify American Deluxe Jazzes made prior to 2010.
