Hello everybody! I'd like to buy a pickguard for my black Jazz bass to make it look alike this one here:

Image

Browsing through Fender's catalogue, I've narrowed down the research to two possible candidates:

1) http://www.fender.com/it-IT/guitar-bass ... ise-shell/
2) http://www.fender.com/it-IT/guitar-bass ... rod-notch/

which are supposed to differ for the truss rod notch (which I don't mind either way), but also seem different in color and texture. Any insight from you guys?

Thanks in advance!

The tortoise shell itself looks pretty much the same to me. I would opt for the one with the TR adjustment notch, if that's how your bass is set up.

Notch is easy to make with file . I often see on guitars 2 different colors for tortoise . As I write some are red some are brown .

I actually don't have the truss rod screw there, but I don't mind that small hole in the pickguard: the color is more important to me. I guess I'll just have to wing it..

The instrument shown is a '60s re-issue of some persuasion.

As such, it will have an 11-screw pickguard, with provisions for mounting the pickup cover and the tug bar.

That said, Fender's tortoise-shell stock is very inconsistent in terms of color. Most are too dark and too red to authentically replicate the tortoise shell of old. You might have better luck with an aftermarket part but be advised -- real Fender tortoise-shell pickguards are four-ply. Most of the aftermarket PG's have only three.

Arjay,

thanks a LOT for your post, it carries all the info I was looking for. I linked 10-hole PGs because that's the number of screws on my Jazz. If the PGs are substantially variable in terms of color, I think I'll go for the "without truss rod notch" model, which also corresponds to my bass set-up. Fingers crossed for a nice color tone, then. Am I right?

Thanks to everybody!

I believe you are. The eleventh screw lies centered just forward of the neck pickup (towards the neck side). With the covers in placed it's concealed from view.

Good luck finding a nice one. I went through six tortoise-shell pickguards for my Mary Kay Strat until I found one with an appropriate mix of colors (all of them were genuine Fender parts).
