Just bought this MIM Jazz from seller who claims it sports Varitone Control Panel. Also looks like a HipShot bridge...Thoughts?

Really don't know if that is a Varitone or not. The current Varitone Jazz preamps don't have one toggle much less two. Audere uses one toggle. The John East preamps do have two toggles, but they are in a different position. If it is a Varitone it might be a legacy model. Does look like a Hipshot. That isn't a bad thing.

The Varitone Bass system is not an active preamp; it's a six position rotary switch that replaces a standard bass tone control. 1st position is flat, wide open bass. 2, 3 and 4 are classic tones of Jaco and Jamerson, 5 is where the midrange dip and metallic sounds of Stanley and Marcus are and position 6 mimics an out of phase pickup tone having the same effect on a P-Bass or any other single pickup bass.

All this tone shaping circuitry is totally passive, therefore no battery is required. The switch itself is a 2 pole make-before-break for quiet switching, a must for recording.

The shaft accepts any standard Fender set screw knob to retain the vintage look of your bass. The folks at CertainBass also install five 10 Megohm resistors, one paralleling each stage of the Varitone, preventing static charge build-up in the positions not being used. Both of these features assure quiet switching during performances.

Thanks for the Varitone info. Mine looks a bit different. It has the 6-position switch, but then two knobs, one with a concentric outer ring, and two mini-toggle switches. My instructor has the bass, but my recollection is that the switches turn the featured controls on and off. Photo of mine is here: http://s1009.photobucket.com/user/Tom_L ... 7.jpg.html
THANKS again for any of your thoughts/info...
