Well, that is the issue.

To be honest, the thought of a bass in cargo scares the heck out of me. I use the SKB/Gator only when I am pretty sure it will be a gate checked item, you know, with carryon baggage, strollers, etc. due to the size of the plane. They seem to take pretty good care of those items, but I still use the stronger case. I would not use the G&G for that. To check any bass and case through as normal baggage is not going to happen. I use FedEx.

I don't know if they let me get away with my bass because of flyer status or not, but I have never had a problem carrying one onto a full sized plane. And I see plenty of kids with guitars in gig bags in the airports, too. But it is a chance you take.

That is about all I can say. But I definitely understand the issue.

The SKB molded cases, are somewhat designed for either horizontal, or vertical stacking in transportation. They actual do stay stacked together better than traditional hard-shell cases.

Fender shakes up their cases every so often. The best hard Tolex cases are the G&G made ones. I'm not actually sure who is making the new Pro Series cases for Fender. The Pro Series ones fit both a Jazz and P-Bass while the ones labeled with the G&G logo on the storage lid are a tailored fit for each model and are generally sold as "Deluxe" so-and-so Bass Case" costing more than the "Pro" series.

The latest Fender case is this one....

Can't decide if I like it enough to buy one or not. It fits P's and J's. The part number is 099-6175-106. It lists for about $180 and street is $160. It has TSA approved locks that don't look as substantial as the TSA locks on the previously Fender logoed SKB flight case did here.....

That case is a Fender logoed version of the SKB 44 case which is still available and fits both a P and a J. I think the Fender logo version is being phased out in favor of the first one I listed.

The non-logoed SKB 44 for comparison....

I think the one BD showed in the first photo, with the red on the handle is a G&G molded case.
