Hello there,

I'm a little confused as I received my new Fender American Standard Jazz Bass yesterday and it arrived in a Fender Hardshell case instead of the Fender-exclusive SKB molded case. Did Fender change the case they are including with American Standard? It's a decent looking case, just not up to the quality/durability I was expecting from the SKB case.

I ordered the bass new online from Amazon, who listed the SKB case in their description. Fender's website also lists the SKB case as being included with the American Standard.

I really love my new bass, but I gotta admit that I'm somewhat disappointed that I didn't get the case I was expecting. I'm just trying to find more information regarding this.

Was the seller an Authorized Fender Dealer?

Amazon is listed at http://www.fender.com/dealers/online/

and to clarify, it was ordered from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller.

Call them and tell them you want the SKB case as advertised. You can also call Fender Consumer Relations. Old school 'vintage' style cases normally only come with re-issues.

I'm still considering my options. I'm hesitant to return it since I really like how the bass plays and Amazon might just resend an inferior replacement with the same non-SKB case. I bought the bass guitar at a good sale price, but the exclusion of the SKB case is making me reconsider how good that deal really was.

My 2013 Am. Std. Jazz came with a hard shell. The sr.#'s around US1303xxxx, US1304xxxx is when they started changing cases, from what I can see. My Am. Std. Jazz 1310xxxx has the new Fender Tuning Keys, and came in the hard shell in the pic. My 1303xxxx Am. Std. Precision has the regular Am. Std. Fender Tuning Keys, and came in an SKB molded case. Look in the Sweetwater Sound, Guitar Gallery for some of the variations. Sweetwater.com They show sr.#'s and pics of the actual bass, and the case that ships with that particular Axe.
My Fretless Jazz is not a re-issue, it's a regular Am. Std. Series Jazz. Fender is changing the cases.

That's what they're doing. I like the hardshell case over the SKB molded. The bass doesn't slide around in the hardshell, like they do in the SKB molded. The cases cost about the same also. The new tuners are cool too.

Like usual, information on most company web sites are inaccurate at best.

Thanks for the info Mr. Nylon, I was starting to question if my case was somehow swapped during a previous customer return. That's a beautiful bass btw - I have the same color configuration with my new bass but with frets.

Fender needs to update their product information regarding the American Standards case changes. I've used Sweetwater before but didn't even think to check their photos for the cases. Even Sweetwater's product page lists the inclusion of the SKB Case while showing the hardshell case in their photos. With that in mind, I'm not sure if I should be upset at Amazon for incorrectly listing the SKB case or at Fender for providing outdated product information to their vendors.

Regardless, I really like the bass and will probably just keep it. The instrument is what's important but I gotta admit this has somewhat soured my first AM Standard purchasing experience.

edit: my serial is US1307xxxx

Hi weareattack! Welcome to the Fender site. Fender isn't the only music site not up to date on their own product lines. If you look at some of the sr.#'s of the Am. Std., and Am. Deluxe, you can see the variations. Some still have the SKB molded, some newer sr.# Am. Deluxe have a G&G molded case. Did you see the new style tuners on yours also? I know what you mean though about wondering if you got the real thing, or not. Is your sr.# a US1303 or higher? I like the hard-shell case over the SKB molded. The hard-shell holds the bass more snug in the case. SKB molded allow the bass to move around inside.
It sounds like you have the real 2013 Am. Std. Best of playing with her.

I just saw your edit about US1307xxxx. That would be in the span of the new case change over, from what I can piece together. 1304xxxx I think is about the change number. I knew what I was getting from Sweetwater Sound, and their Guitar Gallery. It was the only Am. Std. Fretless Jazz too. Tough decision between my bass, and nothing.

Fender get's those cases made by G&G in Los Angeles, My Select Jazz Bass & My Jaco Pastorius Fretless Jazz bass both came in Fender G & G cases,.......The Marcus Miller Jazz 5, Tony Franklin Fretted & Fretless P basses & The american Vintage re-Issues all come with G & G cases,.....I like them a lot,.....I actually just bought a Canadian Made version of these cases for my MIJ Marcus Miller Jazz Bass ( I'm not a big fan of gig bags)
Call me old School :) Made by Long & McQuade music's Yorkville division They're the same fit & quality as the G & G cases & $50.00 -$75.00 cheaper :)

Most new basses I have received in the past couple years have come in G&G cases. Unless I am flying, I actually prefer the G&G case, big time. Takes up less space, which helps when you have a couple of them laying around, and gives plenty of protection.

One exception. If I am flying and know I will be on a regional jet, and that means my bass will be checked at the gate, I pack it in a SKB or Gator case, depending on the bass. I am a FF/MM with Delta, and they have never refused my bass as a carryon on a full sized plane. But they always tell me they could.

The G&G hardshell case is pretty good and seems like it will be easier for me to transport locally in my car. I dig the vintage look to it and it feels quite durable. Part of my purchasing decision was that the included SKB case was TSA approved. I was planning on doing some light traveling by air in the near future but I'm not sure if the G&G case meets those standards. It doesn't seem durable enough.
