Collective wisdom,

I have a Jazz Bass, serial # E302***, headstock says MADE IN USA, date on the butt end of the neck says MAR 16 1984.

I've heard that all Fender basses in this era were made offshore. Was this bass made in the US, or Japan?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Tom

Location: In the pocket north of Washington D.C.
It was made in the USA. The Fender company was not sold until 1985 and USA production continued until then.
After Fender was sold its new owners only bought the Brand and inventory and no actual production facility so they had to make Fenders offshore until a new factory was set up.
That's why most Fenders made in 1985 were Japanese origin.

Your '84 predates the transition.

Hi there BCbassman,
You're generally correct. Depending on your definition of production.....at least on the final guitar line the last four or five months of 84 were mainly night-skeleton crew folks installing locking nuts on existing Strats on what was left of the final guitar line.
A small crew returned after the purchase in early February, inspecting and shipping overseas made products. The month of May 85 was spent pretty much disassembling the Fullerton plant and moving it to Brea or storage.
Just a tidbit of info..for the heck of it.
All the best,
rob
