Hi folks, I am thinking of buying a Jazz bass but is there much difference in the Jazz player bass and a standard apart from price. Are they made in china like the affinity series? the player satin with it's humbuckers and extra switching looks interesting but your thoughts would be most welcome.

It seems that by "Jazz Player" Bass you mean Modern Player? Yes, the entire Modern Player series is made in China. Being that they are "Fender" branded instruments, there is an implication that they expected to be of a higher standard than the Squier line - especially the Affinity series which is at the very bottom of the Fender/Squier ladder.

Thanks 93greenstrat, yes it was the modern player model, I will forget that and go for a standard jazz, you get what you pay for.

Thanks for your thoughts, I had a 60s Precision which I sold years ago, bad mistake but always wanted a Jazz so it will have to be the proper thing, are they all made in America or Mexico.

If you have the cash etc- always go with USA. There are some good Mexican and Japan Jazzes but in all reality the USA is the best for many reasons. I have great sounding MIMex basses but if I were going out to buy new I do Like I always do and go USA. The resale is good - the fit and finish is good- the sound is good. On an average if you take 100 Japan -, 100 Mexican , 100- USA---- I'll bet the best customer satisfaction is with the USA ( for pro musicians). :D

The Fender made in China electric bass instruments are very good. USA is best of course! Fender MIM and China basses seem about equal in build quality. MIM finishing is a little ahead to me. Fender Japan lags in electronics but excels otherwise.

Making good quality guitars in China is not really a new thing. Jay Turser has been building award winning guitars there for years along with a company called SX. Those two were pioneer brands built in China that were exported for worldwide distribution for the past decade.

Fender China basses are even higher quality than the Turser or SX that have been flowing to the west for ages with better hardware and electronics. The Squier China instruments are also great values. Fender not only contracts in China for worldwide distribution but is the very first major western guitar brand to to build an extensive dealer network in China. It is a complete network including warranty service centers, distributors, training centers, etc. Fender is in China for the long haul. This major commitment positions Fender as the electric guitar leader in the most populous nation on earth and that is a lot of potential Fender players.

I'd have no problem owning, playing or gigging one of the Fender China basses. None at all.

I agree with SV, and BD. If they are made well, with the Fender name on it, why not. The MIM's I've seen lately are looking good as well. China can turn out some fine product. They sure have enough of a potential work force there to pick from for quality work.

Ok so far as I know FENDER is the only guitar brand made in four nations simultaneously.

I have two Modern Players, a Jazz and a Starcaster. Both instruments are of excellent quality in fit and finish and sound great. No one should assume anything is better or worse based on where it is made. I have Chinese, Taiwanese, German, and US instruments. Each are good and there are plenty examples of each nationality for instruments of lesser quality. What I do like about the Modern Players are the high mass bridges they have that don't seem to exist in the larger Fender community.

Hi - has anyone tried an American Special Jazz bass? I am thinking of trading my Marcus Miller for one...any thoughts on this or if I am nuts?
