I have been thinking about getting a mexican standard jazz bass to replace my Ibanez GSR200. Are the stock pickups good and if not, What would you recommend for a replacement. Also, what are your favorite strings to use on a J bass. Would a squire bass suffice or are the mexicans better. Your opinions are appreciated. Thank you.

  I would suggest you play all three: Squier; Standard, and American Standard. I would also suggest that you play them all through the same bass amp with the very same tone settings. 8)

Robert - I have a GSR200 as well as a MIM J-Bass as part of my bass inventory. You may be surprised when you examine a MIM J and an American J in person. The finish and detail work on MIM's is, in SOME cases, better than the American made J's.

If you wish to do an aftermarket pickup upgrade, my choice is the Ultra Jazz DP149 set from DiMarzio as found half way down the page in the link below. The DP149's have significantly more output than stock Fender J-bass pickups and are bottom heavy while doing so. This gives you nearly the output of an active pickup system while using a passive bass. The American J-Bass is listed in the main Fender product website as having a certain variety of single coil pickups and the MIM lists another variety of single coil pickups. These single coil sets can produce hum. The DiMarzio DP149 set is multi-coil and are silent regarding hum.

If you are purchasing NEW, then please understand that any modifications to the bass will void the warranty. If you are purchasing used, then by all means, consider aftermarket humbucker Jazz pickups, such as the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz DP-149's for tons of lows and high output - or even the DiMarzio Area J pickups model DP249 for a little more bright and a little less mellow.

You will get suggestions from several other regulars here, so please compare all the features of the basses as well as the specifications of the recommended pickups to match everything to your own playing style.

Also, don't sell the Ibanez GSR200 short... That axxe is a great practice bass and the Phat II E.Q. system in that bass is one of the best that I have ever owned, regardless of the price of an active bass. Best of luck in your research and ultimate purchase.

Go with the MIM if thats what your price range is. Dimarzio- Duncan Antiquity- Bartolini pickups and make sure you put Rotosound round wounds on it.

For good protection while not using it, you can't go wrong with a hard shell case - This is the one below that I use for my Schecter 5 string... but there are many others in various price ranges:

Of course you're better off with a Standard, but the Classic Vibe Squiers are also an improvement over the GSR/Soundgear. If you do go with the MIM, I'd suggest finding a Fender Special Run Jazz.

I think a MIM Jazz is a better choice. I like Ernie Ball strings
