Hi big strings Folk,

First, sorry for my poor English, I'm from Thailand. :)
I'm going to buy the Fender 1974 from my acquaintance. I'm going to checking sound and condition but need some advice from you guys. I never brought vintage before. just new from authorize dealer.

I know that he've said 1974 but after checking s/n it's 60xxxx and should be 76 from fender ref. and it's didn't have 1 tone knob. he didn't know it's all original or not just got it from his uncle.

anyway I need some advice, what to check if it fake or not when i'm reach it.
or if it's legit which points I need to check the condition for good playbility. neck(how to check), pu, body, etc. and how much reasonable price.

pictures are below, sorry for bad quality, but that's what i've got from him.
thanks for your kind in advance.

It seems to be authentic in every respect.

Maybe it's old refinnish? I'd make sure that body is the real deal- you need to take the bass apart and check stamps and markings. Same thing with the neck. I'd be suspect about any guitar over there. Need pics of the electronics too. Pots wires, cap etc.

The pictures are not good enough- take pictures of everything on the guitar in good light. The pickguard should be black- . Don't pay a bunch of money untill you are certain it's authentic. How much does the bass cost?

Tuner screws in the back of the headstock are slotted- not sure on that. I think maybe they should be phillips in 76. The logo decal is too big for 76. In 76 the serial number is under the fender logo on the front of the headstock not on the neck plate'

I'm looking at "The Fender Bass" An illustrated History (BOOK)

There is the possibility that it is a mix of parts bass.

I'm sure someone here can tell you more about it.

The problem with this bass is that it has some legitimate Fender parts along with possibly a replacement body or neck.

1. We need better and more pictures to help you determine the pedigree of this bass.

The problem areas I see:

The body does not appear to have the mounting holes for the front pickup cover plates.
This should be a red flag for anyone sizing up and old Fender bass. They came with front covers and the body has to have holes for the screws that held the pickup covers in place. :!:

The tuners appear to have been mounted wrong on the head stock because the Low E tuner is way out of line for the E string. Maybe a replacement nut was cut wrong- I don't know but I would like a better look at the neck to verify it as a Fender neck.

The tuners appear to be Fender tuners and the serial number neck plate appears to be legitimate, but that doesn't make the rest of the bass a Fender.

Be careful out there folks.

That tuner hole may just be the QC that was going on in the 70's.

Page 64 in The Illustrated History shows a pic of the same thing (on a 74 bass ) as in the OP's pics .

Yes it could be QC but I have to wonder. Asia has produced the best and the most fake Fenders so I would be careful before parting with big bucks for this bass.

Thanks for you guys kind of opinion,
@BCbassman really just notice that line of E string, I'll checking, so this is normally or not? or the body and neck is separate part?
@stroker vance it's cost about 2500$ that he would be good with, for some research this is a bit cheap than '74-76 bass market price right?

I'll post more pic and separate neck and body for more accurate and will update before paid this.

Those are the same pictures you posted originally. Do not buy that bass unless you can take it apart and take excellent pro photos of every piece and every square inch of it if you want someone here to figure it out for you. It could be a good bass but if it is represented as something it is not -- then there is a problem. An all original Fender bass is always worth a lot more than a parts bass. You could lose more than a 1000 dollars USA making a bad purchase. The guys on here are very well informed and have knowledge and have figured this type situation out before.

When in doubt: don't do it. A bird in hand is like 3 in a bush. Don't spank the wild monkey. Leave well enough alone. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.... Don't lolly- gag around........ can anyone think of anymore American sayings I can mess him up with?????? :D

  According to circus owner P.T. Barnum "there's a sucker born every minute" and Thomas Tusser said "a fool and his money are soon parted" in 1557. Very good insight to which we will add Stroker Vance's sage advice "Don't Spank The Wild Monkey". :o

The refinished in clear coat body wood could be alder. It looks like somebody put an older set of Fender Japan tuners on a parts company neck, maybe added some artistic mojo. I don't think the wear and tear on the tuners is natural.

I like it.

In examining the pictures another time I can see that the case is probably legit with (replaced) added latches. The body is at best a refinished Fender body but it may be a replacement.

The tuners appear to be legitimate to me. I would like to see the truss rod end on the neck because the rod nut is a unique style on a Fender neck and more difficult to fake on a replacement neck but it has been done.

The pickups and controls may or may not be original. They should be examined carefully before you purchase this bass.

I hope the price is acceptable for a refinished Jazz bass.

Good Luck with it.
