You could get experimental with your Jazz and get an 8-string neck (plus bridge) for it and have the nylons for the low strings and rounds for the octave strings. I was being goofy, but that might sound interesting with that string combination. I wonder if anyone has ever tried that with their 8-string bass?

That sounds interesting, but I can get in enough trouble with four Nylons. Your design sounds some what like a bass sitar. 8)

It's like the same concept as a 12-string acoustic or electric guitar. You know, Hendrix had a Hagstrom 8 string bass on a couple of songs. I think "Spanish Castle Magic" was one of them.

Hagstrom basses were really a great bass back then. I didn't know that about Hendrix with a Hagstrom.

Yeah, they had one. Image

John Paul Jones also used an 8-string starting with the "Presence" album, but I think it was some sort of Alembic custom job. He certainly could afford those. :P

By then I'd say JPJ could afford one.

Yeah, anyone who could sell out three nights in a row at Madison Square Garden, especially back then, probably had a few coin. Plus, all of the session work and arranging he did prior to Led Zeppelin in the 60's. You'd be surprised on how much stuff both he and Jimmy Page played on that you've probably heard and didn't even know they did. All you have to do is turn on a 60's radio station, especially one that plays the British Invasion stuff, which they usually do.

They were in a lot of things individually, and some collectively. That's how players got to know each other, or hear of others.

Yeah, a good fretless is great to have in the arsenal. It's been over 20 years since I've played one, though. I haven't even noticed any the few times I've been into a music shop the past 14 years up in these parts.

Yeah,........ the new Fretless basses can be a rarity in local shops. Any Fretless I've had over the years was an order to acquire it. I took to Fretless basses easily, especially with either Flats, or Nylons onboard.

When do you think was the first one? I know Fender had a fretless P Bass in 1972, and there was that Ampeg bass.

You know, the mid to late 90's was when I had my fretless, too.

They were there, I just didn't pay them much attention before then. When I did try outdone, I just played like there were frets.
