I have my Jaco J and a 74P. I really enjoy playing the 74P and occasionally gig with it. The Jaco not so much. I am going to put it up on eBay, and if it doesn't sell I am going to bling it out. It came with chrome covers, pg, etc. It won't play any better but it will have the look I like.

I played my fretless today, and like more than before. 8)
What don't you like on your Jaco J, to not play it as much, and sell it off?

Arggghh! I new someone was going to ask. I think it is all mental, and all the neck. The 74P is unlined, sidemarks on the fret. The Jaco is lined, sidemarks between the frets. When I lose my way and look down, I am immediately back on my intonation with the Pbass, with the Jazz, I have to think, "okay, I need to be a quarter inch above the dot". With the Pbass I see the mark but correct with my ear. With the jazz the visuals of the lines and marks mess me up and override the ear, I over think the situation, and lose confidence.

And for some reason, I enjoy the big, fat C neck on the P. This from a guy that also collects the Performers, smallest neck ever. But that big fat P neck just feels right fretless. Great bass.

I have 8 Fender basses one is fret less. It's a 1996 Jazz Bass MIM. A friend of mine bought it new and when he died in 2004 he willed it to me. I use it on 2 songs for the fret less slide sound. Sometimes I get sad playing it, but I play it to remember a friend

My 2007 Jaco Fretless has the side marker dot on the fret line .... I heard that 2008 onward the side marker was placed between the fret line ...... I think that in the last year or two Fender has put the side marker back on the fret line. I prefer the side marker on the fret line. Never gonna part with my Jaco Fretless. :D

You like your Jaco, as I like my Am. Std. Fretless.

I use flats on a Fender Jazz Special (MIJ) and a Gibson EB-0 as well as playing various fretted basses. The one thought that occurs to me is to arrange your sets so that you're not jumping between fretted and fretless from one song to another. I find it takes a little warmup for my muscle memory to kick in when I jump onto one of the fretless basses.

I also avoid going from the long scale Jazz Special right to the short scale Gibson (or vice versa). In fact, I find that somewhat harder than if I have to go right from a fretted to the fretless. But overall, I try to use one or the other (or fretted) for a whole set, then use the break to warm up the memory for the transition.

Yes, I bought a Japanese made Fender Jazz bass that is similar to a fretted one that I already had.
It has no lines on the finfgerboard and dots on the side where the frets should be,
I agree with Afprod that that is the preferred arrangement for playing fretless bass.

It sounds great but i need more practice playing it.

Go Roundwound. Flats don't growl. Don't argue. Only rounds growl in the low mids and snarl in the hi-mids. If you want the additional tube grind & growl, use an actual tube amp. There really is no substitute for that tone combo with a fretless. If you're worried about your fingerboard, just use a coated round.

It wouldn't matter if the strings are coated or not, it is all about density. Strings, especially roundwound stainless steels even eat into your metal frets nevermind a wood fretboard. It will be only a matter of time for your fretboard to feel like the surface of the moon at your hands.

Tonewise black nylon strings will give you the most "mwah" sound and your fretboard will be "immortal".

Thats the way to go.

I am also using Nylons, even sometimes with fretted basses for that extra thump.

I might try nylons someday, but not on my main bass at first. They're considerably thicker than what I'm using now, so that could be an issue.

Yes It could be.

What strings and gauges are you currently using?

I have noticed that although Nylon strings are quite thick they do not have as much as tension to equally thick flatwounds but you will still need a setup.

Thickness of strings are not a issue with nuts as you can squeeze them in, my E string is 110 and fits no problem on AM STD P Bass and it will not damage your nut in anyway.
