Hi all. A newb to the forum, so please pardon any inadvertent rule violations.

I saw an ad for a "original 1966 Jazz" in Olympic white, with a matching painted headstock. Is it possible this if for real? I can't recall seeing any '60's era basses, Jazz or P's, with a matching headstock.

If this is the real deal, then I will buy it in a New York minute, but am suspicious this may be a scam.

Your help is great appreciated.

Thanks!

We would really need to see picks of the bass, but I have quite a few 60's basses with matching headstocks. Olympic White was a popular color starting in 1960, and pretty much continuous through 1980. My first bass was a circa 66 jazz, Candy Apple Red with matching headstock.

Fender would sometimes paint their higher end models, which in the 60's were the Jazzmaster, Jaguar, and Jazz Bass with a matching headstock. What you have described is real. I would be more skeptical however if a matching headstock showed up on a Precision, Stratocaster, Telecaster, or Esquire

Thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know (with pics) if I'm able to put a deal together.

Fender absolutely made Jazz basses with matching head stocks. They occasionally matched head stock colors with Precision basses but Jazz basses were the higher end model and that is the more likely model with a head stock match from 1966.

Be aware that refinishers have known this for decades and the number of refinished basses that appear original is staggering.

Don't pay original prices for a refinished bass or an outright fake Fender.

That is why it is smart to get good pictures of any bass that you are considering and post them here for advice. We can't replace a good "in person advisor" but we have made some good calls in the time I have been on this board.

1966 was a transitional year, with many changes made to the Jazz Bass.
Neck binding with dots, neck binding with blocks and paddle tuners that were chrome plated and branded " Fender " for the first time were some of the changes that were manifest on JBs.
