I've just purchased a 2002/2003 Mexican crafted Jazz and I cannot believe the powerful punch this guitar produced. This guitar could stand up against all my other Fenders and It is a basswood bass. The tone and power are exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you Fender for delivering the goods yet again. I'm finally happy with a guitar that has become my number one. My past Fenders have all been solid and trusted. This Mexican Jazz beats 'em all. My advise would be to play every guitar and make sure you don't rite off anything based on what you've been told. Just trust your ears instead. I'm a Fender player for life!

Always nice to learn that someone is pleased with their purchase of a Fender product.

We like photos on this forum, so post some pictures of your new Jazz.

The Mexican photo flame has got dot inlays as apposed to the Japanese model that has block inlays. The guitar is quite light in weight also. It reminds me of the Precision Lyte. The pickups have raised pole pieces in the A and D positions, and the amber burst is definitely a photo. The headstock has a special edition sticker, and the serial number is from Ensenada plant in Mexico. This is all the information I could gather on line. I hope this helps. Ultimately, my opinion on basswood has changed. I always thought it was less than alder or ash woods. I have so much tone, and power now. My mind has been changed. I found a keeper.

Agree that basswood is a good tonewood. Just soft, so it dents easily. I have a basswood P-Bass and like it a lot. So resonant!

If you have a MIM FOTOFLAME it would be scarce for sure. Never saw one. The Fotoflame models I've seen were all Fujigen Fender Japan things. Strats, Teles, Jazzes and Precisions all from Fender Japan. It was always my understanding that the Fotoflame process itself was proprietary to Fujigen. It was also my understanding Ensenada was using alder in 2002/03. Is it possible you have a neck swap with a MIM neck on a Fender Japan body?

Or he has a MIM bass like I had that has a wood laminent on it. The guy I bought it from told me that every once in a while MIM does this as a special run for someone or for some reason. It was an MIM Jazz( I think 02) rosewood neck- alder body with a thin flame maple top laminent. Not foto flame. I have pics somewhere but darn it I can't post pics anymore on here.

I think I've seen a MIM California Special P-type bass with a flame maple top. It just had a MIM neck instead of the MIA one. I never saw the Jazz version.

From what you've described about your Jazz bass(lightweight basswood)..I'd surely yank out the frets. That thing would sing with a flat fingerboard.
