Hi all, picked this up in the Solomon Islands of all places. Indications are that it's old, but what year? Can't find a serial number or date. Funny neck adjustment mechanism too.

Any hints as to whether it is a Frankenaxe, or mostly original? The neck is super worn and cracked and looks original, just the Fender decal looks a bit iffy.

This is an Asian knockoff. I'm thinking maybe from the Philippines. The neckplate MIGHT be a Fender part, maybe a fake too like the decal. But it was added probably after it was built. Nothing else has even a remote chance of being Fender. You see these 2 saddle bridges on instruments made in the Philippines sometimes. Interesting here is the micro-tilt metal inserts. Odd really. Also freaky is the surround guard at the bridge pickup. Wow. What a wacky knockoff! I don't think it is Japanese. I'm guessing elsewhere and likely the Philippines.

Nah, didn't cost me anything. Good thing is I can clean it up without worrying now. It will be interesting to keep as a curio.

So there were Asian Fender knockoffs coming out of where and when? Are they pirated, or would this thing have been decaled with the Fender decal post sale?

It's really kind of cool in its own way.

Too bad about the decal. If the bass wasn't presenting itself as a Fender, if the bass was just plain old homemade, I would get a kick out of having it as a wall decoration. Wouldn't have to work. Wouldn't even put strings on it...maybe a real rusty crusty set. Cracked body, mismatched tuners, weathered and worn, that guard around the bridge pup - it's really kind of cool.

This would be a great addition to your local $@!&#* Barrel or the wall of your cave/fishing cabin/hunting lodge, etc. Capt. Mulch nailed it...a curio.

They just went one step to far when then they tried to make is a Fender. Oh well.

Back during the Vietnam conflict many thousands of US soldiers passed through the Philippines on their way back to CONUS and many brought instruments like these home. I call them "HOOCH" basses. The decal may actually be original to the instrument. It was not uncommon for Fender and Gibson decals to be counterfeited on instruments marketed toward transient GI's. Mostly these were small scale operations in huts or "hooches." Hence why I call them Hooch basses. There was also a large scale outfit with an actual factory called FINDER and their logo from 5 feet away looked just like Fender's. They copied Fender instruments and amps. The Finder amps actually were pretty good with Japanese electronics and you'll run across one now and then. There actually are people that collect this stuff.
