We have a number of weldors as members here and I was once one of them. I guess I still am a weldor but I haven't welded in ages except at home. Changed careers some time ago. Not a scientist as you imply (jokingly, I hope) but the one thing that I believe separates me from the average weldor is that I actually paid attention in trade school. I was fascinated by the metallurgy portion of the theory classes and all the other guys talked to me about it prior to writing exams because I understood it. Lower critical, upper critical, ferritic, martensitic, austinetic, body centred cubic, face centred cubic, annealing, tempering, stress relieving, normalizing, etc. It was all fascinating to me and I kept my books all these years and refer to them from time to time.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Interesting thread but I am not into freezing or boiling strings. My rounds are not that expensive, so I replace them. My flats cost more, but seem to last forever, something I am still getting used to. However, please see my post under "All others". I think that is a string that may find help from processing. Stay tuned.
