I keep new sets of strings sealed in a thick vinyl bag. I was thinking about putting the sealed bag in the fridge or the freezer. Any thoughts?

This may not be a dumb idea. Cut me some slack. :D

HA!!! No response. Too funny--- BUT it came to me last night- NEW IDEA:

Bass players have been known to boil their strings to get more use out of them. I used to do it way back when Rotosounds were $40 a set. That would be like paying $75 (or more) these days. Boiling the strings did add some life to them and they would sound good for about 3 days then they would fade fast. I have a new twist on the idea :::::::

As the strings would be stretched out from use and the boiling would help them regain some freshness-- then maybe freezing them after boiling would help contract them even a little due to the cold temp and help the strings sound even better than just boiling them. Kind of like shocking the strings back to an earlier time.

Okay- Clean the strings with alcohol - Boil strings for a couple minutes- let strings dry completely- coil the strings- place strings in a sealed bag-- put strings in freezer for 24 hours. Take strings out of freezer - put them on the bass.

I need Oxfan to try this and let us know what happens. I will try it too.

You can completely out of hand disregard this as nonsense or you can weigh the facts and possibilities.

Be sure to put a packet of desiccant in with the strings and then vacuum seal the bag.

Freezing the strings is a pretty cool idea! Dean Markley has been doing it since the mid-1980's with their "Blue Steels". http://www.deanmarkley.com/products/by-subcategory/2-catalog/277-blue-steel-bass
GHS does it too with their 'Sub-Zero Boomers'.

I took my strings out to dinner , then we went and got ice cream. I don't know if they lasted longer, but they had a good time. I had a good time too. Chocolate pecan is my favorite!

Let's not forget.... this is all about freezing your bass strings. I'm going to do this and then reply here and give my observation.

I've never frozen my strings, I've sneaked up on them and scared them, didn't see any difference.

I gave them pizza, (while they were still on the basses) at first, they played easier, then they got sticky and didn't smell very good.

+1 for vacum packing the strings,........ Strokers Idea also made me think of Blue Steel Strings,..... I used them exclusively in the late '80's & early '90's when they first came out but then moved back to using RotoSounds .......... I think vacum packed string freezing is a very cool idea :)
I also think taking your strings out to dinner & then ice cream is pretty cool too 8)
glad you had a good time Oxfan... :D Baskin Robbins or Ben & Jerry's?

Do strings turn blue when you freeze them, like lips? James would know about frozen strings, as he lives in Canada.

The ice cream was from Brewster's, a local chain. lots of nuts! Just like here!

they don't turn blue but let's just say you shouldn't put your tongue on a set of frozen strings... especially if you're in Toronto in January....

He tried to see if his tounge would stick on a butter knife that he left in the freezer over night. He';s in a little pain at the moment.
