The Marcus Miller Jazz Bass has similar electronics, except you get a 2-band EQ and separate volumes for each pickup

In passive mode on the Marcus Miller bass only the volume knob for each pick up work & in active mode the volume knobs & the bass & treble knobs work,.....I actually play my Marcus Miller Jazz bass in passive mode most of the time & I think it sounds great!! ..... I must add that the Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass is also set up similar to the Select active Jazz bass,...in passive mode only the Volume & pan knobs work & in active mode the volume knobs, pan knobs & bass /treble & mid knobs work.(I also play this bass in passive most of the time)
& with regard to the Select line of Basses, back in February I bought a 2012 Select Jazz bass .....my Bass is one of the passive ones & it is defifinitely a deeper warmer sounding bass,( I'd like to know more about how Fender voiced the Select Jazz pickups) I think I preffer the knob setup of the passive Select jazz bass with knobs being Volume, Volume & tone... :)
The select Jazz bass doesn't have a channel bound neck but it does have a quarter sawn maple neck & posiflex rods with a Satin finish w/ rosewood fretboard & a Radius of 9.5"-14" .....(simply a beautiful neck) however there are some Select guitars that have channel -bound finger boards...check out this link: http://www.fender.com/series/fender-select/?page=2

I play my Am. Dlx. Jazz in passive mode most of the time. The active sounds very good, I just prefer the passive sound better. It's nice to have the active mode if needed.

Sounds like Sweetwater needs to get their act together. Too bad the bass didn't work out for you. I am really surprised by what you found out. Active isn't really what I though it was. I guess you'll have to go with the old fashion passive electronics.

"Let me just say how disappointed I am in my experience with Sweetwater (in case you haven't figured that out yet)."

Sweetwater does not post negative reviews. I know this from personal experience. Sweetwater is all about marketing hype. Their service is pretty poor. Their sales reps are quite friendly, but that is about the only good thing I can say about Sweetwater. My first sales rep with them was so bad that I requested a different rep. The first rep got pissed and sabotaged my backorders in a way that would prevent me from ever receiving the items. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! I only buy from them now when I can get the 36 month no interest financing on an item I want. I have had much better experiences, and pricing, with Zzounds.

It is too bad that you were misinformed about the tone control.
Many active basses with a passive over- ride setting have no tone control in the passive setting. This is common among most bass companies.
My Ken Smith bass does the same thing.
If you want a tone control - use the active electronics. That is why it is active!

Passive is there in case you lose all battery power. Volume and pan can still give you a lot of tonal options.

Would you rather have no passive option?
That is what you are faced with when using a Musicman or Alembic bass among many others.
If your batteries go dead with those basses- You stop playing!
