I am happy it plays great, but I am not sure exactly what it is.

I took a couple minutes and did quick comparisons to jazz basses from 63 to 79 and it strikes out against each of them for one reason or another. But it also strikes out against itself. Here are just a couple really quick things you can notice.

Decal is incomplete, incorrect or misplaced depending on the year, and it just doesn't look physically right to me either.

String T is incorrect and misplaced.

The neck has never been attached correctly and yet the body has had a neck attached correctly, so the neck is not original to the body.

The pickguard is incorrect.

The control knobs are incorrect.

An on and on.

I totally see what your saying about the "red flags" but at the same time it is old, if somebody was making a copy would they not fix the neck in the simple way and be more genuine looking? every thing else has correct detail. Could it be some sort of prototype

BODY PIC the screw hole in the "8" is the one in the middle if the scratch plate the pickup sits in the recess to the right

This is an odd picture. I can't understand or get it in proper perspective . . I have never seen any kind of thing like this in a pick up route ever. Sorry just from the pics I'd say that bass is some sort of combo parts bass and it's not done very well. I hope you didn't pay alot of cash for it.
