Pulling the neck and noting the ink-stamped date on the heel will give you a starting point. As well, there may be a date penciled somewhere on the body beneath the pickguard.

No neck stamp and what about the way the neck is screwed, not withe the screws through the back plate no marks on the neck so only fitted this way

Looks like someone was concerned that Pete Townsend might grab the bass in a fit of "stage rage" and have his dastardly way with it.

The neck has only been fix by the screws you see the back of the neck has no other fixing holes did Fender every use this method on a prototype?

After looking at the back of said neck I am compelled to state in all honesty that I am questioning the authenticity of it. In addition to that I would like to say that I don't think it's a real Fender neck at this time . :D Therefore upon inspection of more pictures that you can post I may also feel compelled to say that there is a possibility that the entire bass may not be authentic. I seem to notice things in the pictures that you have posted that are sending up "red flags". I will venture to say that I think other of my associates here will notice this also and will express their views.

+1

I don't think I've ever seen markings quite like that on a genuine Fender neck.

I totally see what your saying about the "red flags" but at the same time it is old, if somebody was making a copy would they not fix the neck in the simple way and be more genuine looking? every thing else has correct detail. Could it be some sort of prototype

BODY PIC the screw hole in the "8" is the one in the middle if the scratch plate the pickup sits in the recess to the right

Crooks have been counterfeiting Fenders for a long time, and this looks to be an old fake. I hope you haven't bought this hunk of junk, and if you have you should burn it.
