If it were me, i'd stay with the Fender pups. My FSR Precision, a MIM, had pups that just didn't cut it. I went with SPB 3's. They are powerful and sound great, but they just don't have the "Fender " sound. It's hard to put into words.

Every bass is different, each has it's own characteristics and unique attributes.

Enjoy the challenges.

Geez Oxfan- if you can't write something nice- write something nice. Now tell me who fought in the Spanish / American War. ??

Maybe... Over your narrow minded head! I purchased this bass already fretless. I have 2 more AVRI Jazz Basses which have not been touched. As a matter of fact one is still in the shipping box. Maybe you are one who will tell me Au should play it because that's what it's meant for? All I asked originally was swap :P qping out original pup's to custom shops and rate the comparison to this ans Seymour Duncan's. I am a loyal FENDER user. Sheesh! Take a pill guys :P .

Before changing the pickups ask yourself what you want to accomplish in switching pickups. If the answer is that you want a more authentic vintage tone then I probably would not make a change. The stock pickup in these is about the same as you'll get from Duncan, Fralin or any of the other major suppliers if you get their vintage wind single coil type pickups. I don't think investing in different vintage wind single coil pickups (such as the SD Antiquity) will make much difference and turn out to be a costly experiment with little to no difference.

If you don't want vintage tone then yes I could see changing the pickups in a player class instrument like this. I could see the point of installing stacked coils or split wound Fralin's to improve RFI rejection on a gigging bass. That would make perfect sense. I could also see a specialty pickup like the SD SJB3 being applied for increased attack and sensitivity if that was your goal.

It isn't that I'm narrow minded at all. However in general I always advise against modifying Fender USA Vintage Reissue instruments in any regard as they historically are the sort of instrument that becomes collectible. This has been a pattern started by the Fullerton RI's. Change one little thing on them and they move to player class from collectible class. Since on this one that ship has sailed you can do whatever you like and be no worse off than you are now, so you might as well make it into what you want it to be and play it like crazy.

But first you have to ask yourself what you hope to accomplish by swapping pickups and go from there.

Thanks for the great information. I was just wondering about the Fender Custom Shops. Seeing they put them in their more expensive basses.

If you mean the Custom Shop 60's set, they spec at 14.5K for the pair. 7.1K neck and 7.4K bridge. Alnico 5 poles.

The Fender ORIGINAL JAZZ BASS pair specs very close to that for way less money. Alnico 5 poles again. 14.75K for the pair. 7.25K neck and 7.5 bridge.

Given the fact that specs are a "target" and will vary a tad copy to copy the ORIGINAL set might be a better value. The Custom Shop name adds about $60 to the cost. 250 Ohms difference between the two spec sheets isn't a lot, but it is a difference. Still both sets will sound full range compared to overwound ones and be hot enough with a modern preamp.

But the most important thing to know? Neither is that different from the stock ones on the 62 Jazz RI. Check them on a meter and compare the resistance and see for sure! Like I said, about any vintage spec wound set will sound about the same as the stock ones on this model which are listed as "Vintage 60's Jazz Style Single Coils (Mid & Bridge)" on the spec sheet which translates to me as being nearly the same thing as either the Custom Shop 60's or the Fender Original set. All 3 are vintage wind early 60's J pickups and there probably is not enough difference between the three sets to matter much and certainly not enough difference to justify spending $150 to $220.

What I don't know besides the resistance of the "Vintage 60's" stock set is the exact pole specs, but it is either Alnico 4 or Alnico 5 and between the two alloys is some difference so that could matter a tad. I could see using the CS set if you bought a used instrument that had SD quarter pounders in it and you wanted Fender vintage wound ones but swapping Fender vintage wind for Fender vintage wind is just not something I'd personally do.

NOW that I better understand where you are coming from, bluzzy8, have I got a recommendation for you!

Slap a pair of these puppies in that defretted '62 AVRI bimbo bass of yours and groove to high heaven!

http://www.lacemusic.com/Aluma_J.php

Use a good coated roundround string such as DR Neons for the growl that only rounds can give. The coating will help protect your 'fretless-board' while giving you hard driving naked roundwound growl.

You will thank me later.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does AVRI stand for?

Good question, and yes you are forgiven. AVRI = American Vintage Re-Issue. Right now there are '63 Precision and '74 Jazz AVRI's available. Last year it was '62 for both basses, and they got rave reviews. Worth the extra $$$ to buy one if you can afford it.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. Just picked up a MIM 5 string Jazz bass so I don't think I'll be buying anymore basses for a while.
