I have a beautiful 2003 or 2004 American Jazz bass, passive pickups, maple neck and transparent red body -- the prettiest Jazz I've ever seen. I also own a Mexican Jazz of similar vintage that has active electronics. I'd like to move the active electronics from the MIM bass over to the American bass, which will require drilling on the back of the bass to add a battery box. Will this affect the value of my bass?

Just placing a recap in your second post so there is no question about the majority info that you are receiving from members....

If your project was to ONLY change to aftermarket passive pickups, such as the high output DiMarzio's, that would be fine as long as you SAVE the original pickups, screws and the original foam spacers. However, if you ever want to SELL the American J-Bass and have modified it with a significant departure from stock, such as a routed out battery box, that will kill the resale value.

I'm sure that others here who are purists at heart are telling you the same thing. I have an MIM J-Bass and I wouldn't modify that one either, to the extreme that you mentioned. Buyers want original everything and you can't simply fill in the back of the body with bondo.
