In early 1990 I purchased a brand-new black Jazz 4-string bass, rosewood fingerboard, with the serial number of H012658, which I think means it was made in 1988-1989. I played it for many years, but since I got my P bass, I haven't played it much. It has some wear on the neck on the back and some tiny chips on the body and head, but overall pretty good. I didn't add anything to it and I still have the original case. Not sure how to post photos to this forum, so let me know and I'll do so.

Any idea of how much I should ask? Thanks.

Can't guess at the value without photos. Pretty sure if genuine it is worth more than $250 though unless it is broken or something is seriously wrong with it. Elderly Instruments has one listed in VGC+ and they want $525 for it. This one needs fret dressing and tone control work. Here is the link to it: http://www.gbase.com/gear/fender-and-reg-jazz-bass-and-reg-1989

Gee- I was going to say $100 bucks because that is what I would like to pay for it! LOL

You have to check the market in your area for the type of Fender bass that you are selling.
A Japanese made Fender Jazz bass has a specific market niche and they are not getting any more plentiful, so a fair price is determined by what has one brought recently from any of the online auctions, since those are the only source of historical data on instrument sales.
These are not USA made Fenders, so you can't expect them to appreciate like an American bass but they are very nicely made and they have the same neck profiles of a mid-sixties Jazz bass, which makes them very desirable to the right player.

Most of them were finished in white or black with the occasional metallic red or blue.

Good luck with it.

+1 to BD and BC. The bass has fair enough value if it is in very nice condition and is actually becoming somewhat unique. Both posts add value to your question. Good information. I would have said something like $375-$425, but MIJ is not my forte, so ignore me and enjoy an increasing value.

How can I tell the value of my Jazz bass ?

Throw it down the stairs and see how that makes you feel. :D

Stoker, you only say that because you know if you trash your 72 Jazz, you might be able to score mine.....no, no, no, do not throw it down the stairs. I like mine.

My Jazz is priceless to me and is not for sale. I do not care what anybody else thinks about it. I have this very same attitude towards my Precision.

My Yamaha 5-string, however, is for sale. $350 cash. Firm. :)

Selling a good, worn-in Fender is just a bad idea. Hang on to it. Money can't replace the feeling of that neck.

My good worn in Fender basses are not for sale. I know if I threw them down the stairs I would realize how much they are worth to me. I'd probably get a handkerchief and wipe away the tears then try to fix them-----OH-- I don't like to even think about it. I'm done.

I hate to say this but; just have one stolen from you- Then you will know the value!

This is always a loaded question around here. The value of a bass is really what someone will pay for it on any given day.

Realize that value is always a relative thing. To me a great playing bass is always worth more than its selling price, because of the music that I can make with it.

I agree. I have an 01 Jazz stock that's worth what? Maybe 775? There's no way I'd sell it for under $2000 at least !! The reason? I know how it sounds live thru a PA with a band crankin' out the Jams. I know how many musicians have come up and said good stuff about how that bass sounds--- I probably will never sell it. It's one of "THOSE" basses. Nope you can't touch it. :)

Hey what a coincidence. I have a stock 01 Fender Jazz too.
It was too good of a deal to pass up and its a great bass.
Sunburst with a rosewood neck.

But If you come by, I'll probably let you touch it. Maybe even play it. LOL ;')
