Hi Everyone,

I´m just about to buy what it´s supposed to be a JB 1974.
Can anyone please help me and tell if this bass is a real one, it has some rubers on it, but I don´t know if they are real.

Both bridge and plugs are brand new from the fender custom shop.

What do you think?

Hi stratele52,

I´m talking about the "J.Torres" and 74 rubbers of the first 3 pictures.
I think that J.Torres typo is not right, looking for some others I saw this:

Rubber like rubber stamps  I'm french Canadian speaking .

The last 3 picture is a real original '74 Bass ?

If yes , the one you want to buy do not have a 'Micro Tilt "adjustment . Also round truss rod "stopper " is missing on the neck ( body side)

Rubber stamp is not the same .

There are some bass expert on forum , Ask to Brotherdave here . Chance he will read this old post if you write some words ;

At first look I say that is a fake 74, Sorry. My 74 has the small Torres stamp like the pictures of the real 74's you posted.

That neck plate and screws are just too new looking and the logo on my 74 is black.
That J in the pics just looks to nice and new, A 40 year old bass would have at least a little yellowing of the finish. That bass has what looks like one of those "75" necks and bodies-- the ones made in Mex or Japan that they call "75's".

I did not spend more than a minute looking at the pics. It didn't take long for it to register as a little "fishy".

okay (edit) - I went back and looked again and I say it's fake.

Couple of things bother me the more I look at the photos. The round stamp should possibly be "FRR" probably and not "74." I'm not seeing the 8 digit date code clearly on the end of neck.

The more I look the more Torres stamp appears off in font and size.

Also the Torres stamp is in the neck pocket of the body. I didn't catch that at first! But since he was a neck builder his stamp probably should not be on the body in the neck pocket.

Even if the above looked correct I wouldn't touch it because of the non-original parts anyway. There are plenty of all original ones so I would pass on this one. The headstock decal is pretty good if a fake.

I'd walk away from this one.

The bass appears to be a fake. The Torres stamps are not from Fender, They are a crude forgery.
The bass has many things that make it suspicious. The neck plate is too new. It appears to have been re-chromed and doesn't have a scratch on it.
The body dimension is off. The string retainer is wrong, the tuners are newer than 1974.
The strap buttons are wrong.
The pick guard should be white, but it is a tortoise shell style guard.

The whole bass begs the question. If the bass was a true closet classic- Where are all of the original parts? Is the body even drilled for the pickup cover plates?

If you buy it- pay a reasonable price for a parts bass, since it is not a 1974 Fender Jazz Bass!

In the neck pocket....how about that....nice catch. There was enough other things wrong, but that one flew right past me.

You'd be surprised how much gets past me. BC caught the missing cover holes. They should be there but aren't.

What if the OP bought the bass before he came on here and did the hit and run? Maybe? :D

That's OK Dave. You know all of the production details for all of the dif. Fender models, which is not my strong suite.

The cover holes and finger rest holes are very clear clues as to a body being original.

This hit and run guy may have already bought this bass. If he did, I hope he didn't get screwed, but we can only help the ones we see in time.

If you come around here after the deal, you may not like the answers. LOL

Guys,

thank you all for the answers.

I didn´t buy the bass, but I played it for a while.
It sounds awesome, and I think it´s a great instrument but it has lot of re issued pieces.

I don´t think the price was ok, and some things were rare, so I didn´t buy it.

Thank ypu guys!

Well I certianly hope the owner enjoyed reading this thread as much as I did. Very informative. This is exactly why I only buy brand new from an Authorized Fender Dealer.

There's really not a lot of intelligence involved with taking an all brand new parts bass or whatever it is and then trying to pass it off as an actual 1974. Still someone may believe it and buy it. Maybe not.
There have been a few or more of these basses on the site lately. More than I can remember from the years before.
