I have the 50th anniversary jazz bass. The case it came in is black inside. Where the back of the neck rests in the case, (near the top just under the head) there is a light black stain that has rubbed off from the case onto the back of the neck. Does anyone know how I can clean that off without ruining the neck? :?

Yep. Piece of cake. Just use Meguiars Cleaner Wax. Great stuff for keeping your neck clean & slick.

Wow, I need to check mine. I never noticed anything and just used a Fender polish cloth after each use, but it has been cased this whole month. Thanks for the heads up.

I checked the link that linnin sent and it leads to a car wax. I hope it works. I was thinking of having a bass tech do it. I'm too paranoid to do it myself.

It Is Car Wax! Works Great! Don't Be A Sissy. It cleans your finish right on up. If it's good enough for a million $ Ferrari, it's good enough for your Fender. I've been using it for years.

Thanks again for the reply. What was bugging me was how deep the stain may have penetrated. I think the neck has nitro finish and I hope the stain hasn't sunk too deep. I will pick up some of that cleaner tomorrow and work with it.
Thanks again and keep it low

Sandpaper . No just kidding but I regularly use 600 on the back of my nitro neck if it starts to ball up (small particles). After playing for a while my hand shines it back up until the buildup starts and then I sand again. Finish just impedes sound anyway.

I tried the cleaner/ wax and it didn't work. I took the bass to a tech and he uses the same wax and such that linnin suggests. He also said that the stain leeched into finish because of the nitro cellulose material. The stain doesn't show on the front and has no effect on the playability so I am not going to worry about it.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Keep it low!

I pulled out my 50thJ tonight. I have no discoloration from the headstock rest at all. I will keep an eye out though. This, about a month or so, was longest it has been cased since I bought it as NOS...no clue how long it was cased prior to delivery, but I just bought it in April '13 so it was not a spring chicken upon purchase.

The nitro cell finish is susceptible to damage. I have to ask, do you use a guitar stand with the foam rubber padding, and if so, does it hit the neck at the same location? The reason I ask, I just received two stands from MF and they both warn against a reaction with NC finishes. So I read up, and they should not have a negative effect under 24 hours, but will after that. I am selling those two and going back to Hercules which appears to be the only stand promoting tolerance.

I am sorry for your issue, but my bass and case appear to be reacting normally with each other, so there has to be something off somewhere. My only guess would be storage on a stand, otherwise you should contact Fender because that was not an inexpensive bass.

The bass lives in the case except when being played. The tech says the nitro finish will soak up anything if it touches it enough. I thought about contacting Fender but they will probably say the same thing the tech said.

This problem is really an issue for the case manufacturer. The lining material of the case should be dyed with a color fast dye that does not leach into neck finishes.
Good luck on pursuing that by the way.

I have the same problem in a G&L case that has stained my G&L bass with a nitro-cellulose finish. It has been happening for years in cases with dark linings.

I will say that I have never seen this happen in an older Fender case with the orange lining.

There you go! Sandpaper, Baby, Yeah! You can always take the neck off and wet sand the back right on down to bare maple and just leave it that way. I've known guitarists to do that. Be advised that the bare wood will discolor and look rather ugly over time, but who cares if playability and comfort is increased.

My best friend (now sadly deceased) stripped every bit of finish off his then brand new 1972 Rickenbacker 4001 for that very reason. He stained the body walnut and used a gunstock oil on it and the neck. No finish anywhere.

Well the finish on the back of my Roadworn is nitro. The sanding doesn't take much nitro off at all--- A good guitar painter ( I know One) could wet sand that neck with 1200 or smaller and buff it or even add nitro back to it and you would not be able to tell any black stuff was ever there. The case blows if it has cheapo dye. I'd get rid of it or just put a rag there forever. That's too bad the case messed up the bass. What's to say other parts of the bass would not be effected over time? The lining getting wet might make it run too if it's cheap or just not good dye. I'd test that .

Get a rag wet and wring it out real good then rub it on the lining and see if any color goes onto the rag.

Gibson uses nitro on a lot of their guitars. White lining is used on a fair number of the cases.
