You can buy any J bass you want but it has to be new. It can cost less than 2000 and you can do whatever you want with the left over money but you have to send it to me. That's the only stipulation. :D

OOOHHHHHHH,......... You didn't stipulate that earlier.

The overwhelming pick is the American Standard Jazz. There really weren't enough responses to do a good poll type outcome but the result was as I thought it would be.

The other pics were : Roadworn-- Dimension--American Deluxe-- Classic 60's. All of these can be had for the stipulated price of $2000.

I did not count SKCopper tele's vote for a USA Geddy because the only USA Geddy I could find was the custom shop and it costs $8000 so that choice did not fit the criteria of $2000 or less, so that vote is null.

My overall point being is that I kind of figured if you gave someone $2000 and sent them out to buy a new Jazz they would not buy a new Geddy bass. This tells me that even if the Geddy is the top selling Jazz bass the reason for that is mostly price.... For whatever reason I can understand the sales of the Geddy bass and that's cool.

Yes I don't like the Geddy bass but it's quite alright if other people do. To each his own. I have to stand by my thoughts on the Geddy as being an okay sounding bass and a fast playing bass BUT a bass that in the long run leaves a bit to be desired . I will say also that the signature basses do not sound like the originals no matter how close they come in looks and components. Just ain't happening.

I know there is a chance for great debate amoungst certain players as to the value, playability and looks and sound of the Geddy model. In recent years MIM basses have come a long way. I have not played or heard a MIM Geddy. I still think straight out of the box it may be a good bass but it's not going to sound like Geddies bass for a couple reasons. ONE- it's not a 72 USA aged Jazz bass and TWO -- the biggest reason is Geddy Lee is not playing it. Of course we all know these facts and I say buy a Geddy Lee bass if you like it ----- it doesn't suck.

:D

I didn't say Geddy Lee bass to sound like Geddy Lee, but because I tried one and I like it.

You can get the fancy, aged Geddy Lee bass for well over $2000, but there is also the unaged version, and the one I played was under $2000 and I really liked it.
So if I had $2000 it would be tempting to head back to the store where I saw it and get it if it's still there.

but what I most likely do would be to get a MIM fretless J bass and then use the rest of the $2000 to get a fretted one.
Although I might get the regular Jaco one.
I just saw one the other day for $1800.
The Custom Jaco one is well over $2000.
Again--not to sound like Jaco, but because I played on and I liked it.

That's what I say to. If you play on it and like it-- go for it-- I'd like to have a Jaco bass simply because I like Jaco .

For my money, the best value in a Jazz Bass is the Classic 60's model. It's a higher grade MIM model and has the all the feel, sound, and looks you could want. And for less than half of your $2000 budget.

+1

The MIM Classic '70s Jazz Bass is similarly endowed. The sunburst model is particularly striking.

My amazing wife Mrs ABS got me a Classic 70's P Bass as a house warming present and it is amazing!! That and my 11 Standard Jazz in LPB are 2 of the best basses I have ever played/owned!

I bought my Geddy Lee (MIJ) new because I picked it off the rack and fell in love with that neck. I then noticed it was a GL signature. I now feel it lacks in the sound dept. Still plays great though.

I would pick American standard Jazz(2012 and up), Road Worn (own 2 and are my favorites) and '64 Reissue jazz (still under $2K).

You can't go wrong with any of those 3, IMO.

I don't think I would buy another Geddy Lee sig if mine got stolen. It plays really, really nice and compared to other GL's I have tried, this one just feels better than the rest. It's just that lack of low-mid thud that turns me away.

Pop in a pair of Custom Shop jazz p'ups that Fender is putting in the American Standards. I swear they are the very best sounding jazz p'ups I've ever heard. Can't be beat. That'll make your Geddy Lee perk!

I'd look for a Standard Jazz in black(MIM). Those are every bit as good as the last generation's American Standard's.

I'll have to restate my choice of which Jazz I would buy. The American Deluxe is my choice. It's nice to have the onboard mixing in the active mode, or switch it off for the passive mode.

I would buy a Marcus Miller Jazz. Its a great bass. i'm not crazy about the looks of it but it is a killer bass.
