Is it? I thought they made an MIA version at one point?

No.

Initially the GL's were assembled by Fuji-Gen in Japan but production was recently moved to Ensenada, Mexico.

For $2K? Hmmm. Definitely a tough choice for me. I've already got a Roadworn Jazz that's been serving me faithfully for the past few years, so I'd pass on getting another.

So it would come down to two models. I'm really intrigued with the American Vintage 64 Jazz bass, but I haven't had a chance to try one out yet. I've seen a couple in stores, but oddly I've seen many more online reviews of the 63 Precision bass reissue than I have of the 64 Jazz. It's kind of a head scratcher.

But in terms of what I could use from a practical standpoint? I'd say an American Standard Jazz bass 5 string. Ideally, I'd love to get one in black with a rosewood fingerboard and a tort guard. Lo and behold, Fender doesn't think that's a set of stock features that makes sense, so the black finish is only available with a maple fingerboard and a white pickguard. Blech. But if I was just buying one off the rack? I'd probably go with the Am Std Jazz 5 in Olympic white finish (rosewood fingerboard, tort guard).

This is going good. I hope everybody chimes in on which Jazz they would buy for a max of $2000 or less only. :D :?: :D

Remember = you don't have to spend the full $2000 .

For my money, the best value in a Jazz Bass is the Classic 60's model. It's a higher grade MIM model and has the all the feel, sound, and looks you could want. And for less than half of your $2000 budget.

The reason I would buy a Roadworn Jazz is because I have a RW P bass that I like a lot.
If that was not the case I would go USA Standard . BUT I already did that..so... :D my vote is the RW Jazz like I said before. :o

+1

The MIM Classic '70s Jazz Bass is similarly endowed. The sunburst model is particularly striking.

Okay, I re-read your original post. You have up to $2000 to spend on a Jazz. There is no "what I could do with the money I saved" if I bought something cheaper. Just "what is the best Jazz for under $2000. If you are talking new, I stay with the American Standard. If you are talking used or NOS, I might choose the 50th Anniversary. I appreciate all the odds and ends from Japan, Mexico, etc. and the signature series. Heck, one of my favorite basses is my Jaco fretless.... but one shot, one new bass, I am still with the American Standard.

I agree with affprod. The American Standard is the way to go in a Fender Jazz. A real no nonsense bass.

From what I understand an Am version is beyond 2000.

You can buy any J bass you want but it has to be new. It can cost less than 2000 and you can do whatever you want with the left over money but you have to send it to me. That's the only stipulation. :D
