I have a Jazz Bass I bought new in 1994 and I am replacing the pots but the kits I can buy have 3 x 250k pots and the guitar I have has 2 x 250k and one which is a blend pot and basically two pots in one and it "blends" the two pickups. My question is, what affect would it have if I wired it up as the new wiring diagram shows? I found the links to some drawings in another post and both drawings are the same, however I can't seem to find a drawing the same as my bass is wired.

Regular Jazz Bass diagram: http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... B_SISD.pdf

"upgraded" JAzz Bass diagram: http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

Can anyone help please? Thanks. :D

That's unusual. I like the operational convenience of a master volume/blend/master tone configuration on a Jazz but it can result in an apparent volume loss due pickup loading around the center location of the blend pot. This issue is nonexistent in a volume/volume/tone arrangement which is why Leo Fender went with it.

If you want to replace the pots it must be because of a performance issue. I'd spray clean them a couple of times and see if that cleared it up. Only if one is broken should it be replaced.

In short, if it ain't broke then don't fix it!

If it is broke then make careful notes, hand draw your own diagram of the way it is wired and replace with exactly the same pots. Likely the exact same pots are not in any "kit" from a parts house. Not all double ganged pots are the same. You need exactly the same ganged blend pot to use the same wiring .

There are some diagrams in this thread:

Again, ONLY if absolutely necessary would I modify anything.

I'd use DEOXIT spray cleaner on those original pots before replacing them though.

Hi Brotherdave, like the nickname hehe. I have tried contact cleaner etc and the "blend" pot seems to have almost no resistance on one of the windings and I have tracked down a Fender Pan Pot to replace it. Just waiting for delivery. In the mean time, I have scoured the info I can find, made wiring schematics and read loads and the info seems to say what you are saying so thanks heaps for your input. I will try the "new" wiring and make a comment when I have done it, then when I get the new Pan Pot I will try that too. I did find a drawing for a Master volume, Master tone and Balance, so I will try that combination too. Once again, thanks loads for your reponse :D
