Hey folks. First post with a question about neck wood options (if any) on this bass, which will hopefully soon be my first Fender.

I prefer the look of the lighter colored maple neck on the American Deluxe to the darker rosewood on the Standard. Is there a lighter colored wood that is tough enough and available for a fretless neck on this guitar, maybe in a different model year?

Thanks!

This response is my own speculation. I have no hard knowledge of an official reason you dont see maple fretless fingerboards. My guess is the reason is because Fender uses a finish on its maple board guitars. This prevents the wood from turning dark due to finger crud. Removing the frets, particularly on a bass, exposes the clear (or tinted) finish to direct contact with the string windings which will quickly rub off the finish and result in an unsightly fingerboard.

Most fretless bass players want a little deeper tone they get from the softer Rosewood, over the harder Maple.

Unless Fender releases an American Vintage '77 Precision with that unlined fretless maple board or a Tony Franklin fretless maple neck signature.

Yes a brave soul indeed!! That being said I recently put medium gauge RotoSound Nickel Wound RB 45's on my Jaco Fretless artist model ( with Pau Ferro fretboard), Pau Ferro is a bit harder than Rosewood,....anyway my Jaco fretless sounds sweet with rounds,.....I hesitated putting rounds on it for a long time because my bass came stock with Fender 9050M Flats & I heard some horror stories of the poly finish chipping & fretboard scratching from some people using rounds on this bass but so far so good,....it's been a couple of months & I haven't experienced any of this. I think the way you play has a lot to do with it but that's my opinion.

You'll never ever see a Tony Franklin Fretless with an unlined Maple fretboard,..... as I 've said before Tony's signature Fretless has a tough as nails Ebony fretboard,.....(his original Fretless that Fender copied to make his signature bass had an unlined Rosewood fretboard but Tony & Fender decided on going with ebony because it can take a beating...& from what saw in a Tony Franklin interview he says Ebony is reffered to as Iron wood on Brazil (where this wood hails from)

Seems like people are still buying, playing, and praising fretless basses, so why isn't there a fretless model in the new Dimension line?

Note for readers: I bought my first bass - an Ibanez SR400QM - a year ago yesterday. I'm new to this stuff!

In good time my friend, In good time... :) I'm sure a Fretless version of the Dimension will be a reality at some point down the road. It will all depend on the successs of the Dimension line of basses & the demand for a fretless version..
