I've started this stupid topic. It's not much better than "Fender vs. Gibson", but we need discussions like this from time to time.

I LOVE jazz basses, but I've never seen a good Fender 5 string. That's because I like slim necks. So while Rockoe Beck sounds nice, it has a huge neck I cannot play. I've had an MB-5 with terrific neck, but it sounded weak. And Marcus Miller is again HUGE for my hands.

As I'm about to get me a Pedulla Rapture J-5 I've thought to ask people here - if there's a good Fender Jazz bass with comfortable neck? I know it's hard to say what's comfortable, but the flatter-the smaller = the better for me. I'm not just after Fenders, so if you think Lakland Joe Osborn is better than everything Fender offers, I'll be glad to hear. And I prefer 35" scale, though I know there are no 35" Fenders.

You find the neck on the Marcus Miller Jazz 5 too huge??....Marcus & Fender worked together on this bass ..... Marcus wanted a 5 string that felt as close as possible to a 4 string,......I've played this bass & the neck is Awesome......... :)

I suggest American Standard Jazz bass 5 or the Standard Jazz 5. The neck is flat and really comfortable. I used to have a 24V jazz and that neck was pretty wide and thick. I compared it to my 2012 American Standard P bass V and my 1996 Jazz bass V and these are thinner and comfier.

I have to disagree (even though you're right ...the American Standard Jazz 5 does have a nice neck) it's still a bit thicker than the MM5 & engles finds the MM5 neck Huge,.... I own a 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 & have played an American Standard Jazz 5 & both the current American Standard Jazz 5 & American Deluxe Jazz 5 are both 1.875 at the nut (with a Nice 9.5" radius)
& as much as I love my 2011 American deluxe Jazz 5 (& the neck on it)

I have also played the Marcus Miller Jazz 5 that is 1.825" at the nut (with a 7.25" Radius ... same radius as the MM 4 string) I've played it several times at my local music store & the neck on this bass has a slight edge over the American Standard jazz 5 with regard to comfortability & for a 5 string neck it really feels close to that of a 4 string... but that's my opinion & to each his own. Engels you should try as many 5 string basses as possible (I've never played the Joe Osbourne bass or Pedulla Rapture J-5 so I can't comment on them.. maybe an Ibanez 5 string Bass would work for you as they have smaller/thinner necks) .... decide for yourself which one is the best for you as opinions will differ from person to person & what may be a great 5 string bass for me or someone else may not be a great 5 string bass for you ...Good Luck :)

Thanks for advises, I agree I need to try as many basses as possible, but I happen to live in Israel and we hardly have one 5 string Fender in a shop. That's why I need to at least know what to look for, and that's what I'm asking. And Ibanez is out of question, I loathe the damn thing.

i am the same way. I have a 98/99 MIM Jazz Bass and I did not like the neck.It felt to "baseball batty" and I could not get the action low enough for my taste.Granted,my guitar tech said the truss rod was at it's furthest point adjustment wise and could snap if we kept going with the turns! So I ordered a 2013 Fender Modern Player Jazz BASS V 5 string 34" Scale Rosewood neck. I love 35" scales as well...but this neck is amazing! It feels slimmer than the previous one and is fast and silky smooth. It's a no frills neck...dot inlays..hand tinted... 4+1 tuner configuration (my old neck was the 5 inline with the closed mini tuners).

I love the truss rod adjustment being at the heel and also the new adjustment nut makes for fast set up.

I just installed the neck on Thursday so I have not gigged with it yet. But I can tell this is going to be my main 5 string.

I got mine new in the box from STRATosphere.

Here is the url to their store on e-Bay: http://stores.ebay.com/The-STRATosphere/Necks-/_i.html?_nkw=5+string+jazz+bass+neck&submit=Search&_fsub=2&_sid=105525814

I am not sure if they have any more 5 strings..but shoot them an e-mail..you never know.
Good luck...

Modern Player necks have white dots on them.

Those abalone markers are a nice aftermarket mod. 8) :P

Fender just brought the Modern Player truss rod design in their newly released American Deluxe Dimension basses.

Fender's response was too late IMO, the concept was already adopted by Hartley Peavey, Ernie Ball and Gary Levinson.
