Hey guys,

I recently bought a 1974 Fender Jazz Bass, and I'm not sure if the seller was right with describing it as 'all original'. It has a brass nut. Were they used in this time? It is the first that I have seen a brass nut on a JB that's why I don't really know what to think about.

You can see the nut and headstock here:

What do you guys think of that?

Thanks,
Kai

No, not at all original. Does it play OK? The ultra cheap plastic nuts that CBS-Fender used in this era were absolute $@!&, and often cracked and broke into many peices. Roger Waters used a custom made brass nut on his Precision. I use a custom made stainless steel nut on my '76 Precision. I know were're talking Jazz Basses here, but no, brass nuts were never factory at that time. Perhaps they should have been.

I have as many bone nuts as I can get. They cost between 60 and 100 up here. That's hard to afford sometimes but I like bone the best.

I know that Alembic used adjustable brass nuts as an option. But Fender didn't. However, I do remember seeing those brass nuts advertised in Bass Player magazine as aftermarket parts.

Brass nuts were never original equipment on any Fender bass made during the '70's.
There were lots of brass nuts being used to replace the original plastic nuts.
Brass was a big craze during the 70's and it still makes for a nice nut IMHO.

One other point is that your bass is not a 1974 since it has a bullet truss rod.
They did not show up on Jazz Basses until 1975.
I am sure that it is still a very nice bass.

Have fun with it.

Maybe I rained on his parade when I told him his bass was a 1975.
I call them as I as I see them.

If you don't want to know the truth about your Fender bass, don't come around here asking questions! LOL
