I am looking for some advice on converting my new 62 Jazz to Fretless. I must admit I have tried this with a few other basses over the years with not much success. I was not getting the tone and sustain I was looking for. I do own another 62 Reissue and I installed Custom Shop PUP's and the great tone is there. Now I am looking at doing the same with my recent aquisition. So I believe I can get the tone from the new PUP"s but the sustain is what I am concerned about. Why you ask am I trying again? Well I weighed each bass and the older one is around 9 lbs. the new one is at a staggering 7.2 lbs. I think this may be the key to help getting the tone I am seeking. My question is if the body is lighter will it produce a better /warmer sustain? Factoring in all the above? I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks!

Hey fellow bottom dwellers.......Lot's of reading but no advice? What's the story?

Man, trust me. If the Jazz isn't fretless already, then DON'T MESS WITH IT! SERIOUSLY, why destroy a '62 Jazz Bass. Those are really the best year for a Jazz. Look around for one that is fretless already. Hope you do the right thing. Don't hurt the bass man.

Back around 1988 or so I bought two MIA '62 Jazz re-issues to take on the road with me. One I kept stock, but the other I had converted to a fretless by a pro guitar tech. Man.....I wish I still had that bass! It was one sweet fretless bass. It just sang!

If you do it, for sure have it done by someone with experience in fretless conversions. You won't be sorry!

I kick myself in the butt for selling it! While I was on the road I converted to 5-string basses and had an Alembic and a fretless Ken Smith built for me. So I ended up dumping all my 4-stringers! What a mistake that was considering all I play these days is only 4-string basses again!

There are too many after market fretless necks available that will bolt right on your Jazz Bass to risk converting it to fretless. Believe me, you will love the fact that you can go back to a fretted neck if the fretless bug leaves you. Also, your bass will be restorable to its original state. That is a lot of value for a '62 Jazz Bass and it will be a lot easier to sell and it will sell for more $ as a fretted bass.

There is no way that you can have a conversion done for less that a good replacement fretless neck.

Good luck.
