A rod that hasn't been adjusted for a long time can make a terrifying crack/creak sound the first time you tighten it, especially if the strings are on and tuned to full tension.

And sometimes it'll be stuck enough that you feel high resistance and then it suddenly releases (along with an even scarier louder creak).

If a rod sits a long time without needing to be adjusted and you need to tighten it to straighten the neck, get in the habit of loosening it a little first to free it up. Then tighten it. (You don't need a waiting period for that, just loosen a little then start tightening.)

Rods can rattle or knock, but it's pretty uncommon. The way basses resonate, a rattle at the bridge or head can sound/feel like it's coming from the neck/rod.
