Well it does look a bit like maple and alder and basswood actually. It also looks a bit like Poplar. I have a 74 Poplar body P bass. One guy told me I was nuts and that Fender did not make a 74 Fender with a Poplar body. He was "all seeing" and "all knowing". I wish I was. :D

There's a badly refinished 74 poplar Precision in my town for sale. I haven't heard it yet, but it feels like a piece of styrofoam attached to a very dense neck. The store the bass is in smells like OLD GUITARS, and puts you in a trance as you enter. They are a good bunch of folks(at the store).

There is also a rare "Fire Series" Jazz Plus Deluxe(in Fire Series MIM-style vanilla white-of course..OVER ASH) in that same store. I might buy it. The Fire Series was a short period of Fender history involving an emergency at the Mexico plant, which moved production to the U.S.

I think the bass is Wenge or Oak- maybe Padauk.

No, certainly not.

Fender never used wenge for their general production basses.

Ditto for oak and paduak, which are considered as a Warwick specialty.

Only a few Custom Shop one-offs employed those exotic tonewoods.

This bass is definitely crafted from solid non-veneered ash.
