One of the first thing's a smart guitar buyer does when purchasing an instrument online is check out the the serial number to ensure it's not stolen or a fake,..... so congrats now you paid money for a Fender Bass with a scratched off serial number that you've exposed on a public guitar forum as a stolen bass that's now pretty much worth nothing, & even if you go to a luthier to get work done on it at some point ..they're gonna know somethings up with this bass ......anyway it's your business
but you have to take responsability for your part in purchasing this bass but it sounds like you don't give a crap & obviously don't have a consious ........ You say you don't posess the money to buy a Fender well you know what neither do most of us but we do this think called working for it or getting it on layaway. anyway we can't obviously help you so Good Luck.

Whoa, guys.

While a prima facie case might be built for a stolen guitar, the evidence thus far while compelling is only circumstantial. We've done the right thing by pointing out the folly of such a situation but let's allow the gentleman some dignity as he decides how to proceed from here.

I agree that the tone is harsh, but, anyone reading these posts who are uninformed will learn something from another's mistake. That's the point of the Fender Forums, isn't it? Learning and sharing.

Just what Andrebasswalker can do to rectify the situation is going to be interesting. I hope he's an upright person who made an honest mistake. We can always use new members.

When I made my comment, I meant it. Intentionally or unintentionally, the bullet is out of the gun and it can't be returned.

I think what's maddening is that this guy thinks he was in his right to purchase this bass & tuff luck for the original owner... a Scratched of serial number, potentially stolen bass, cheap price....meh! no biggie..... I deserve it,..... No Shame & No Class IMO.
Thing is I've known a few people in my day who have had their gear stolen & it's a sick feeling to loose gear you work hard for,.....some of these guys were gigging pay check to pay check,.....an instrument for some is a tool that gets you a job & a pay check,..... no bass no Job,.... & then there's the sentimentality that goes with loosing that special bass or Guitar..... anyway that's my 2 cents.......moving on...

Well, we've found out what pushes your button! :) I know it's a bad situation. If in fact, he knowingly bought it, then he's scum.

there are a lot of people in ths world, sad to say, that have no integrity, then there are those who always do the right thing.

Yin and yang thing I guess.

I think the issue of stolen gear "pushes that button" for all of us. I had a Bassman head ripped off many decades ago and though it was ultimately recovered, it was still a very disheartening event. If I happened to be in possession of said Jazz Bass I'd start scouring all the websites dedicated to listing stolen gear and see if I could determine whether or not the instrument was in fact "hot". If so, I'd move heaven and earth to try and re-unite it with its rightful owner.

I can purchase a bass anytime......not so easy to buy one's honor and self-respect.

Yes you can usually get close to the issue year by checking the POT CODES. Numbers stamped onto the pots but you have to remove the control plate and ease the plate out to see the back of the pots.

Instead I'd take it back to the guy you bought it from and ask for your money back. If he won't give you your money back tell him you want to call the police to come check it to see if it is stolen. He'll probably offer to give your money back then.

Whether you get your money back or not, you may want to advise police that you think you accidentally bought what might be a stolen item with a defaced serial number and whom you bought it from. They can check local larceny reports for the item for a similar bass reported stolen.

Without having a serial number on it, it is impossible to say if it is stolen or not...but also illegal to remove the serial in the first place. The seller can be reported for that alone. I'd try to get my money back and tell the police about this guy whether you get the money back or not.

Be careful playing it out, original owner might be there and go...."HEY! THAT'S MY BASS!" Often owners will put hidden marks on them somewhere, like under the pickguard.

Another reason to get your money back is no dealer is ever going to take it on a trade or buy it outright.

Never deal with someone you don't know on a used instrument you need their complete ID and need to see a photo ID and get a BILL OF SALE. I'd get it notarized.

For those that don't know what a deliberately altered/defaced/removed serial may imply and what the legal ramifications may be in possessing such an instrument perhaps an offical Fender response & stickied post might be in order. Perhaps just start a thread in the lounge and see where it leads. Interesting comments and insights, I'll bet.

FMIC probably does have an official corporate position but since this topic encompasses criminal law and the ramifications thereof, and every state's statutes are different, there may not be much insight to be gained by a new thread in the Lounge other than wider exposure of the issue to the membership at large.

A bad thing? No.

A good thing? Perhaps......
